My parents saw it and said it was horrible. I saw the trailer and knew it would suck. I honestly don't know why the critics love it.

it was prolly the worst 10 minutes of a movie i've ever seen. must be something you only understand in a mid life crisis, or something. otherwise, total crap.

poor pig vomit.

It also had a penis shot in it. That automatically makes it a horrible movie.

I don't think this movie is one with a universal appeal, to be honest. I read an article about this film in "Entertainment Weekly" where the writer/director, Alexander Payne (who also wrote and directed About Schmidt) said that he wanted to make films that didn't necessarily appeal to younger audiences, but were more human tales. A few of his quotes on IMDb reflect that:

Quote:

While accepting his Director of the Year award for Sideways at the Palm Spring Film Festival: "I thank you for this award, though I think there may be a problem with a world in which making small, human and humorous films is 'an achievement.' It should be the norm."

Quote:

"We don't have movies about ourselves, and we don't have a national film culture. It shouldn't be an epic aspiration to make simple human stories, but it is."

Many of his films focus on these sort of crises-of-age and, as such, are not intended for a younger audience who cannot yet relate to the overall themes being represented. They don't have any frame of reference yet. And, as such, the film isn't necessarily intended for them (or you).

Leave me alone. I want out of this silly game, especially since it's a school night.

wull thats good. cuz me am want boobies.

...n'stuff.

i didn't find the movie downright awful. its not like it was offensively bad, or anything. it was just incredibly unappealing.... or at least the first 30 minutes that i could stomach, before we left. there's only been one or two movies in my life that i went to a theater to see and simply could not tollerate.

this was one.

Give yourself another ten years or so and you might look at it differently. Maybe.

And if you want boobies, then let me suggest Payne's previous film About Schmidt...

One of the themes was a guy trying to cheat on his fiancee before their wedding day.
Is this one of the themes that younger audiences wouldn't understand?
Typical elitist director.

I saw a trailer for Sideways when I went to see The House of Flying Daggers.

It didn't look like the kind of film that I'd pay to see in the cinema. Maybe when it comes on TV I'll give it a viewing.

Paul Giamatti is an under-rated actor and so it's good that he's finally getting some lead roles and critical recognition. He deserves it.

I read an interesting explanation for the film's critical success.

In a nutshell, the explanation went, critics like this movie because the lead actor, Paul Giamatti, looks like a typical film critic, but still ends up with Virginia Masden.

We have these films here in Denmark, or films like it, and they are all utterly boring.

And I tell you, Danish movie industry is actually known for good quality.

except when they come up with a movie like this, cuz JEEZ such movies are boring!

but hey, I'm 23

Pity me -- I sat through this whole movie because it was recommended to me by a friend. It's very pretentious and pointless, despite all that bullshit Chewy quoted. If there's anything worse than the coming-of-age film, it's the mid-life-crisis film. When they're done well, they're excellent, but most of them are extremely mediocre at best, this one included. It had its moments at times, but it was not at all deep.

TTT's judgment: Overrated.

Was it supposed to be "deep"? It's a comedy. Not a straightforward one, but a comedy still. I wasn't expecting the string of hilarious incidents near the end, and I thought that was the best part of the movie. But even before that I was already sold. It's very well done, well paced, and well acted.

No, it wasn't an out-and-out "comedy". It was a melodrama with comedic moments few and far between in some places. All the stuff between Giamatti and Virginia Madsen was certainly not meant to be comedic in any way. It was the interplay between those two actors which just fell flat for me. I saw no real connection, no "magic", and I just didn't buy it. When she did take him home with her, it seemed like nothing more than pity sex, though you know they were trying to make it out as more than that.

And the scene where Giamatti explains his love of pinot noir just seemed extremely pretentious to me. He was talking about the grapes but really talking about himself, and it came off as too obvious right away.

There wasn't anything intelligent about this movie. It had a few funny moments, but I'll never watch it again.

I liked it. I'm nowhere near a mid-life crisis, but I suppose it did appeal to someone like me because it's about a struggling writer. I empathized with the main chacter for that reason.

It started somewhat slow, but there were definitely some hilarious scenes in the second half. I didn't really find it pretentious because most of the time it was poking fun of elitist snobs like Giamatti's character(usually the pretentious films don't do that). I didn't think it was trying to be "deep", though there was a clear parallel drawn between the grape-growing and life.

I didn't know it was by the same guy who did About Schmidt, but I'm not surprised. It's the same kind of humor; not for everyone.

Honestly, I didn't care enough for the Giamatti/Madsen plotline to remember it. I was thinking about Giamatti's relationship with Hayden Church, which is the central plotline of the movie in my opinion. The way that plotline ends confirms this is a dark comedy. I didn't find the Giamatti/Madsen plot interesting, but I don't think it's bad enough to hate the movie. It's just stuff thrown out there to fill the gaps and provide a romantic "happy ending", after everything else.
