Guess Who Said Yes to Playboy?
You know her as Debbie Gibson, the pert and peppy teen singer circa 1980s. Now she's all grown up and wants to redefine her image. Or drastically change it, depending on your perspective.
Step 1: Change your name from Debbie to Deborah.
Step 2: Pose nude in Playboy.
Step 3: Release a new CD titled "Naked."
Step 4: Hope like crazy it works.
Syndicated gossip columnist Liz Smith reports in Wednesday's column that Debbie, who wants to be known now as Deborah Gibson, will appear in the March issue of Playboy, which hits newsstands on Feb. 11. Now 34, she has tried very hard to escape that goodie-goodie teen image by touring to some critical acclaim in "Grease, "Gypsy," and "Funny Girl," and even starring on Broadway in "Beauty and the Beast" and at Studio 54 in "Cabaret." But it hasn't done the trick.
Enter Playboy. Nothing screams all grown-up like that. Playboy describes the layout as a "well-defined, yet very sexy, feminine look." Gibson's marketing team has been hard at work because her new single, "Naked," will premiere at the same time. Get it? How clever they are!
Writes Liz Smith in her column: "I never know what to think of the taking-it-off-for-Playboy-route. Sometimes, it works. But just as often, it doesn't...Still, almost every woman who's done this magazine layout claims she did it not to promote her work--acting, music, etc.--but rather to 'free herself' from old inhibitions. I'm all for freedom. Let it fly, Deborah."
