Batman gets the very big screen treatment.

Quote:

March 01, 2005 - Warner Bros. and IMAX Corp. have announced that the forthcoming Batman Begins will be simultaneously released to IMAX and conventional 35mm theatres on June 17th, 2005. It has been dubbed Batman Begins: The IMAX Experience.

"This film will be the latest in a series of fantastic Warner Bros. Pictures releases which have helped change the way moviegoers experience Hollywood movies," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "Warner Bros. Pictures has been an instrumental partner in establishing this trend and advancing the IMAX theatre network as the newest distribution platform for Hollywood content."

"We are extremely pleased with how our 2005 commercial film slate has taken shape and believe Batman Begins will be a perfect way to kick off the blockbuster summer film season," added Greg Foster, IMAX Chairman and President of Filmed Entertainment.

To summarize:

IMAX is pretty much the movie experience on steroids. Huge screens with clearer than clear picture (the stadium near me really is eight stories high with crystal clear quality). The picture quality is so high that most IMAX movies are shot with special lens cameras on special film.

Not only do IMAX theaters come with surround sound unlike any other movie theater, but the screens themselves have perforations for audio, so they can have certain sounds come from certain sections of the screen. When someone on screen speaks, it often sounds like it's coming straight from their mouth. Off screen sounds sound like their coming from just off screen. Etc., etc.

Do people actually go to these IMAX theatres?

Apart from when they're on holiday somewhere that is

Moreso ever since they started showing movies day-of-release.

wednesday summed it up well.

i'd only go on to say that it totally enhances a movie experience. "independence day" is one of my favorite movies, because of its (for the time) neat-o special effects and grandious size, etc. i saw it three times in the theater, and loved every bit of it.

a few years later, i went to an IMAX theater in baltimore, and was treated to a 30 minute special on IMAX capabilities, which featured various scenes from various movies: star wars 1, independence day, king kong, etc. ... and i was totally and utterly amazed.

instead of the standard, large movie screen featuring those huge alien space ships, it was a screen 10-20 times larger that sorta curved around towards you, on its edges, making everything appear 3D, since you're "surrounded" by this enormous screen.

in a normal theater, you can see the edges of the screen. you know its a screen you're looking at. in an IMAX theater, the screen is so huge that all of your peripheral vision, in every direction, is the movie! so, you're totally lost in the experience.

even king kong, an ancient movie, was totally thrilling. the ape swipes at a plane, knocking it from the sky. the perspective switches to the pilot, spiraling out of control to the city floor .... and everyone in the theater is dizzy and gets that "rollercoaster drop" feeling in their stomachs, because you actually feel like you're there.

and thats just the visuals!

every bit of the sound is enhanced and surrounding and involving.

its really an amazing, amazing experience.

not many, no. for two main reasons:

1) there aren't that many
2) they really only have discovery channel-type movies.

thats why the recent trend of putting real movies (spider man, matrix, batman, etc) on an IMAX screen is great, as it will make the theaters more popular, and hopefully more common.

Most major blockbusters (and catwoman) have been released on IMAX. I've never been to one but I might go to the one in Portland for Batman Begins and Revenge of the Sith.
