God Forbid: The Washington Post says some passengers on a United Airlines flight to LA were irked that a flight attendant uttered the words “God Bless You” over the aircraft public address system.
Passenger Ken Bicknell says he was taken aback when the attendant thanked him and the others for flying United and then concluded the statement with “God bless you all.”
"I just wondered if it was appropriate,'' said Bicknell, a San Francisco-based government consultant. "You're a captive audience and you have to listen to what the flight attendant tells you.''
The paper found one Michael Tomaro, a Milwaukee-based psychologist who specializes in fearful flying, to say that such comments could “trigger latent fears in passengers who aren't terribly comfortable aboard an airliner. Tomaro said fearful fliers could misconstrue such statements and think the attendant is invoking God's help for a safe journey.”

Oh please. I had a monk say "Bhuuda bless you" to me before and it didn't do shit to my composure. And please to note I'm a Christian. This is just more attention whoring from secularists.

I don't like it when people express any religious sentement outside of a personal conversation. It's innapropriate. If I am talking to a friend who is aware of my religious convictions, then adressing me in this manner is fine, even welcomed. Faith is a private matter...and I find that people prone to throwing out general sentiments of spirituality are doing so as a display devoid of any real meaning.

I suppose I had one of those "is this appropiate" moments one time at a job were everybody was all asked to pray for the business I was working at. To me in the scheme of things praying to God about such things is wrong. Personally I'll take any blessing offered though. And I never understood the keeping your religion to yourself thing either. If everybody was like that, how would any religion survive?
Fair play!

I can see someone viewing it as inappropriate. However, claiming that it might “trigger latent fears in passengers who aren't terribly comfortable aboard an airliner" is a little silly.
If they are that afraid of flying, either don't fly or take a serious dose of valium before getting on the plane.

I blame the FCC. They've empowered people into thinking they have the right to not be offended. These are angry dumbasses that think the world revolves around them.

I agree...If you're not being attacked personally, then really you just need to swallow it and move on. Getting hung up on something that doesn't quite sit with you is pointless.

I think this started long before the recent bout of FCC shenanigans. It goes at least as far back as the rise of the PC movement on college campuses in the mid 80s.

I'm surprised you think that, G-Man.
No, not really.
From Washington Times interview with DeLay:
Mr. Hurt: Have you ever crossed the line of ethical behavior in terms of dealing with lobbyists, your use of government authority or with fundraising?

"Scary", I don't know, but a little weird, when it comes up randomly in a conversation with a complete stranger.
I certainly wouldn't shed any tears over hearing "God Bless America" a little less.

I am a Christian and very religious....but when somebody says it to me very randomly it definitely throws me off....probably because I try to be a Private person.
so I can see some people not liking it.....but a general statement like God Bless America doesn't hurt anyone.....insert your own god...or I know your agnostic Ani...pretend your lord of the universe and they are talking about you when you hear it......might make it more tolerable.

...pretend?
I ordered pizza the other day from this pizza place that's owned by a family of Russian immigrants(and judging by the accents, somewhat recent immigrants), and when I got the pizza box, I noticed "God Bless America" and a big American flag on the box. For some reason, this caught me off-guard. I suppose there's a perception that foreigners aren't patriotic like natives are; that they aren't capable of being "true Americans". When you think about it, it makes more sense that foreigners would be even more patriotic than natives. Afterall, most come here because they aren't happy with their own countries. Why wouldn't they be appreciative of a place they chose to come to?
Just something that this discussion reminded me of.

I've allwayse attributed a great deal of patriotism, because unlike tose of us who were born Americans they went out of thier way and endured loss, hardship and seperation from thier families to become Americans. It doesn't surprise me at all when I see "God Bless America" in association with imigrant buisiness.

I think it's great when people do that. Their religion is something very important to them so it's an honor that they would like to extend their faith benefits to others while not trying to convert them.
I say gesundheit when people sneeze though, 'cause that is just a wish of good health.

sorry, that didn't read like trolling. I'm shocked.
My mom was worried when she asked if I would like to attend Easter Mass with her that I might be offended. I then realized/put into words how I would really only be offended if my mom DIDN'T want me to participate in something that makes up such a large part of her life. Faith is the core of many people's lives and if they want to spread the love, more power to them. So long as they don't try to convert me.

That's a far more mature response than I might have had, mostly because so often when I'm asked to do things like that it is because people are trying to convert me. I guess I've trained myself to be defensive about things like that.

*shrug* Mom has bigger problems. She thinks gays = pedophiles and mistrusts Arabs. I think I can afford to let her want to share her heaven with me. I mean, I love my mom. It doesn't hurt. As for when strangers tell me I should go to church, then I say, "no, I'm cool" and if they don't piss off and are impossible to ignore I tell them off a bit.
