Radio Host Fired After On-Air Pope Discussion

Thu Apr 14, 6:46 PM ET

A talk show host who questioned the beliefs of the Catholic church and took a caller's question about whether the late Pope John Paul II would go to Heaven has been fired.

Marty Minto, 39, was fired Friday after three years at Christian radio station WORD-FM. He told Channel 4 Action News reporter Janelle Hall that he was surprised by the move.

"I have never been fired, never been let go," said Minto, a senior pastor at a church in New Castle, Lawrence County. "I just don't understand. I'm confused. I haven't done anything like a Howard Stern or went against any FCC rule or regulation."

What he did was stimulate conversation and ask questions about the pope's death.

"I asked listeners if they're getting too much or not enough of the 24/7 coverage," Minto said.

When a caller asked whether Minto thought the pope would go to heaven, the host gave his opinion.

"The Bible makes it very clear that unless a person is born again, the person will never enter or see the kingdom of God again," Minto told Action News.

Minto, who recently won two Pittsburgh Achievement in Radio Awards, said his boss thought he was pushing listeners away.

"I find it hard to believe I'm alienating people," Minto said. "My lines have been jammed all week. Hundreds of e-mails.

"I believe I had a right to share. It's a talk show. It's controversial because of the topics we talk about. I am appalled that, all of a sudden, my so-called brothers and sisters in the world have now said you are no longer allowed to say anything, we're firing you, we're quenching your speech because you went too far."

Chuck Gratner, general manager of WORD-FM, said Minto was let go because of differences in how he conducted the show.

Minto said he was offered a severance package but is thinking about contacting an attorney.

Thoughts?

I'd appreciate it if replies to this thread focus on the incident mentioned in this article, and that it not be used as an excuse to slam anyone's beleifs.

My personal interest stems from the fact that one of the careers I'm currently pursuing involve working in the media in some way, so controversies in the media are something I look at very carefully.

This is ridiculous. I think a man of faith has the right to question the religious validity of a position such as the 'pope'. If he finds the concept in contrast to biblical guidlines, he should be able to voice those concerns. Talk radio is all about discussion (which involves opinions of various inclinations). Just because he felt that the pope fell short of his ideas of God's will does not make him right, wrong, or even mildly offensive. If the station wanted to have a favorable rehash of popular opinion, they should have had a catholic minister hosting the show.

The amazing part is that he didn't even pose the question he simply let a caller on air with the question. But hey the station has the right to choose it's audience and if they want to gear towards an audience that's unwilling to look and question it's positions then clearly this guy ws wrong for the station.

Well, at least we had two intelligent posts before this thread got sidetracked.

Did you intentionally mispell monkey when refering to me as a kind of subtle reference to my own chronic misspelling? If so that was VERY clever and my hat's off to you. If it wasn't, then pretend it was, because it would be much better to be thought clever than just another one of us lazy misspellers.
