mr. america debuts!Mr. America makes his anxiously anticipated debut tonight on SmackDown!, airing at 8/7 CT on UPN! Who is Mr. America? What is his agenda? We'll find out tonight during a special edition of Piper's Pit! The fallout from Backlash continues tonight. The Big Show has apparently been ostracized from the WWE locker room after his controversial attack on Rey Mysterio at Sunday's pay-per-view. You'll get an update tonight on Mysterio, including never-before-seen footage of the San Diego native being wheeled out of the arena and into an ambulance last Sunday. Plus, the Big Show will speak about his actions and has promised to take on an opponent who is closer to his own size. Torrie Wilson was undoubtedly not too happy with Sable after Sable's bikini contest last week. But the two Playboy cover girls will have to put any differences they have aside, as they'll be teaming up tonight to take on Dawn Marie and Nidia! Four days after literally stealing the WWE Tag Team Titles from Team Angle, Los Guerreros will be in action -- carrying the titles, even though they're not the champions -- taking on Matt Hardy and Shannon Moore, accompanied by the newest Moore-on, Crash! Meanwhile, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, who will also be in action, are reportedly irate that Los Guerreros have their titles. Plus, Chris Benoit goes one on one with Johnny Stamboli, accompanied by the other two members of the FBI (Chuck Palumbo and Nunzio). And what will John Cena have to say about losing to Brock Lesnar at Backlash? Find out tonight at 8/7 CT, when UPN presents SmackDown!

This can't be Mr. America's debut...I saw this guy wrestling as Terry Boulder and Sterling Golden in the south back in the late '70s...

There's a number of perfectly good explanations. One is that I'm a time traveler. Another is that I watch old tapes. Yet another is that I never actually saw him back then and was just simply making a joke.
So you see, there's plenty of ways that I'm 11 years old.

The only one of those explanations I'm willing to accept is that you were attempting to make a joke. If you were watching a tape, you would have said so. And I don't believe in time travel. So there. ![[worst. icon. ever.]](graemlins/comicguy-icon00.gif)

Some people just don't know when to quit and get out of the business once and for all.
Guess they figure bringing back the Hogan/Vince/Piper feud will boost ratings...worked for me once.
Only good thing about Mr. America...The return of the theme song!!!

thing is, other than giving 2 past their prime wrestlers jobs, who really benifits from this? and by that, i mean, are any of the younger wrestlers getting any sort of benifit from this? no.

From the Smackdown SuperStars site: http://smackdown.wwe.com/superstars/mr_america/index.html Little is known about this mysterious Superstar, Mr. America. There’s no telling what’s underneath that mask. Maybe he’s bald ... you know, like a bald eagle. He sports a physique as chiseled as Mt. Rushmore, leading many fans to conclude that he never neglects to train and take his vitamins. Being that he's a true American hero, he no doubt says his prayers and believes in himself as well. Coming to the ring to "Real American," the song, of course, that was also the theme for ... Pat Patterson and Gerry Brisco, Mr. America is an overwhelming fan favorite. One thing’s for sure: His American-maniacs are always in full force, from sea to shining sea, brother. In spite of still feeling he's past his prime, this is officially one of my favorite gimmicks ever.

by having flair and hogan and piper return (etc), they are helping the wwe guys... but only the few wwe guys that were already getting majro pushes.
hhh, stone cold, the rock, kurt angle, rikishi, kane, etc. all the guys that didn't really need help.
lesnar and edge got some benefit, but... not enough.

O'Haire's having all of his heat pulled away by being Piper's boy in another meaningless Hogan-Piper feud.
Edge teamed with Hogan and slowly and surely began to slide back down the card.
And every time Hogan shows up, Benoit's push quickly disappears again. He goes from getting a standing ovation in a world title match to jobbing to bad Italian stereotypes in tag matches. Does Hogan owe Kevin Sullivan a favor?
Batista and Orton were made Trip's boys and began to lose what little sense of identity they had, being made to dress and act similar and stand in the background for Trip's boring promos.
So far, other than Lesnar, there has been no real benefit that I've seen for the younger guys.

As Grimm said,O`Haire is being overshadowed by Piper!
Hogan is not exactly helping push anyone!
Somehow I dont think Trip needs Flair to push him into the spotlight!
So just who exactly is benefiting then Rob?

i know your "hogan rage" is blinding, but surely you didn't miss my above statement, where i clearly stated it was the guys needing the help that weren't receiving it.
in his wwf revival, hogan did help put over: the rock, undertaker, kurt angle, hhh, and kane (to name a few), however, as said, its not like these guys were starving for the extra attention. it could have been better spent.
however, hogan's pitching in on lesnar and edge, tho perhaps not overly succesful, shouldn't be simply ignored.
piper is helping draw attention (at least) to rikishi and o'haire.
im not saying these are huge and helpful boons from the gods, but its a start, at least.
what flair is doing lately, on the other hand, i haven't a damn clue. its bad enough they've turned him into the ugliest valet of all time, but to waste his charisma by having him help out hhh? just dudn't make sense.

My point is that he didn't put them over. You can't put over wrestlers who are already over. It was another case of the writers and Vince jerking off while the fans screamed for something cool. Wasted time and money. The old guard is not helping in the least bit. Yet more money down the drain.

well...
hogan majorly put over the rock. granted, as we both know, the rock wasn't exactly someone who needed any extra t-shirts produced. however... it was a major boost to the rock's status. he was now more of an icon which, in turn, was a way of putting current wwf above 1980s wwf / wcw / nwo (then done to death as hogan lost to every current wwf big name). getting a one up on a guy like hogan gave everyone a new status, which could then be spread around.
that, i believe, was the intent, anyway. but, it must be left mostly in theory format because, as said, only one character, brock lesnar, was able to receive anything big from the ordeal (and thru him, help out big show or cena)
there are some little moments -- flair's somewhat rivalry with booker t or rvd, hogan pairing with edge, piper working with o'haire. i think there's some benefit to "the little guys" in all of those moves, or moves like them. but we all agree its a far cry from what could be done.

No, he didn't. The Rock was already at a level that, in the very least, paralleled Hogan's at his peak. The only people left who really care about Hogan are the guys who've been around since the 80's. And I think the Rock job soured them more on Dwayne than it did to propell him to new heights with the old Hulk fans.

So, let's see. Beat Hogan, become a larger icon in wrestling. Does that mean, by your logic, that Goldberg is now a wrestling icon? It hasn't seemed that way to me. Considering the fact that he's getting heavily booed at shows even though he's supposed to currently be a face.
quote: Originally posted by Rob Kamphausen: that, i believe, was the intent, anyway. but, it must be left mostly in theory format because, as said, only one character, brock lesnar, was able to receive anything big from the ordeal (and thru him, help out big show or cena)
I'll partially agree with you here. But, considering his previous track record, I think everyone expected the same thing that we got with Goldberg. He was going to run over everyone they put in front of him to build him quickly for another top name guy. I don't think it was a surprise when Brock got the gold. The only surprise was that they took a little longer with it than they did Bill.

Hopefully these guys are learning something because this isn't helping their images to the public. When Christian teamed with Jericho, you could see a slow change on his delivery of comic moments. So, being teamed with Y2J really did help Chris's performance on that level. Maybe Piper can teach O'Haire something about being a villian. And maybe Trip will learn how to have charisma from Flair. (Then again, he'll probably just keep fucking the boss's daughter to stay on top.)
