This September: Original Unaltered Trilogy on DVD
    May 03, 2006

Fans can look forward to a September filled with classic Star Wars nostalgia, led by the premiere of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the long-awaited DVD release of the original theatrical incarnations of the classic Star Wars trilogy.

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

That's also the day fans will be able to experience the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game, the action-packed sequel -- filled with tongue-in-cheek humor -- to one of the best selling video games of 2005. To see the trailer to the new game from LucasArts and TT Games

Well... glad I held out on the first DVD release, then...

Still, was this really unexpected, what with Lucas being a money-whore and all?

Lucas is a greedy pig! Glad I waited before buying ANY Star Wars episodes 4 thru 6 DVDS, too..I had a feeling that, eventually, one of the DVD releases would be the ORIGINAL , unaltered, unfucked - with version of the trilogy..I saw the altered versions, and do not care at all for the added effects.. I was in my twenties when all three movies came out during 1977 - 1983..and THOSE are the versions I first saw and remember. I was young then..and life was not as complicated at that point.

Geez, I hate Lucas as much as the next fanboy. However, it seems to me we should be happy about this. A lot of us wanted the original versions and now he's agreeing to release them.

What's wrong with that?

Like Jerry, I made a concious decision not to purchase the altered versions, so its not like Lucas is getting my money twice. Furthermore, if you liked the altered versions enough to buy them in the first place, don't bother buying these. No one is putting a gun to your head.

Isn't "money-whore" redundant? All "whores" do what they do for money.

'Star Wars' goes back to basics

Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars films on DVD.

Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals.

Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).

The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31, a strategy that Disney uses on many of its classic releases.

Lucas re-released his original three Star Wars films in theaters in 1997 with inserted scenes and improved special effects. Those "special editions" were further enhanced for the four-disc DVD set. With the original versions coming to DVD, here's what you'll see again:

    • In Star Wars, Han Solo shoots a bounty hunter named Greedo. Lucas changed the scene later so it seemed that Greedo draws first, and changed it again for the DVD so that they appear to shoot simultaneously.

    • In Empire Strikes Back, the ice creature that captures Luke Skywalker gets less screen time.

    • In Jedi, Sebastian Shaw returns as Anakin in the movie's final scene. Lucas substituted Hayden Christiansen, who plays Anakin in the more recent films, for the 2004 DVD.

Back in 2004, Lucas told the New York Post, "The special edition is the one I wanted out there."

This new set of DVDs does not constitute "George changing his mind," says Lucasfilm's Jim Ward. "What we've always said is George viewed the revised versions of the films as the definitive versions."

Fan attachment to the originals is strong. The movies topped entertainment website IGN.com's recent chart of Top 25 Most Wanted DVDs.

"People want the option of having the movies that they remember and people are opposed to George Lucas' revisionist tendencies," says the site's Chris Carle.

The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the restored versions. "It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006," Ward says.

i just can't believe how much fucking money this fucking franchise makes by releasing the same (fucking) shit over and over again.

stop buying it!

i'm not as anal about star wars as a lot of fans are. i don't care who shot first, or what anakin looks like in jedi.

either way, can anyone blame him? he's making money and pleasing the hold out fans,

What people should hate him for is his claiming credit for other writer's ideas. Back in 1980 he credited the Darth as Luke's father to the screenwriters. Now he claims it was his idea all along as some grand scheme instead of making it up as he went along.

I'll buy this. I haven't bought the set because I knew this would happen. I would rather he have done it to begin with, but it's a ploy to milk his fans dry. And they could spend the time to remaster the old films and clean up the FX, which no one has a problem with that. I don't think anyone would bitch about removing the blocks around the TIE fighters. I notice that he's positioned this in time for Christmas and giving it the limited sales dates will help fuel a frenzy by fans to buy it, creating a quick influx of profit for Lucasfilm.

Seems as though this was just one more move in his turn to the Dark Side.

http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/ap/20060504/114676476000.html
Quote:

'Star Wars' Creator Becomes Storm Trooper

Not that long ago, in a nearby galaxy, George Lucas joined forces with the dark side. The "Star Wars" creator has become a Storm Trooper.

Hasbro, maker of "Star Wars" toys, is paying plastic tribute to Lucas, interpreting him as a limited-edition action figure in Storm Trooper attire.

The head of the toy maker's "Star Wars" division called Lucas "the greatest character in the universe."

"We took a cue from when Han Solo and Luke disguised themselves as Storm Troopers," said Derryl DePriest, marketing director and admitted lifelong "Star Wars" fan. "We placed George in his own universe that he created."

This is the first time Lucas has been honored with an official "Star Wars" action figure, DePriest said, but not the first time his likeness has been used. Hasbro had previously issued a figure that looked like Lucas called George Sacul.

"That was very subtle," DePriest said. "This time we really wanted to pay tribute to the man himself."

Lucas thought it was a "fun" idea, said Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale.

"He laughed because he never imagined he'd be a Storm Trooper," she said.

The new toy is only available to participants in Hasbro's "Ultimate Galactic Hunt." Fans must show proof of purchase of five vintage "Star Wars" action figures to get the George Lucas Storm Trooper figurine.

I don't want the original theatrical versions on DVD, I want the THX remastered versions that came out about ten years ago, before the special editions. But I'll be glad to see the movies how they were originally done.

the wording confuses me. To me it looks like both articles say it will be the original theatical versions, from 77-83, not the remastered ones.

Geez, some people are never happy!
When the special editions were released, cries of "Release the originals you cunt!" echoed throughout these boards!
Now he is releasing them, like you asked, you shout "Greedy cunt!"

Its not like this is unique to Lucas!
How many DVDs have been re-released in different versions?
It just seems like Lucas is singled out because its the done thing!

But it, dont buy it, the choice is yours!

They're ready for pre-order on Amazon:

A New Hope

The Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

I also love the reviews left by fans.

Quote:

AN OPEN LETTER TO GEORGE LUCAS:

Dear George,

Thanks for giving us the greatest saga of all time and thanks for raping your loyal fans out of every penny they've worked for because you think we are all mindless sheep that will buy any junk you feed us with the Star Wars brand stamped onto it. You tease us by finally releasing the original un-cut theatrical versions of the Star Wars films on DVD with shoddy NON-ANAMORPHIC Bantha poo-doo quality transfers directly from the 1993 Definitive Collection Laserdiscs and you think we will all happily buy them and it will shut up all of us whiny fanboys like a politician giving a lollypop to a child while you laugh all the way to the bank. You, sir, are the epitome of GREED... or to be more precise... YOU ARE GREEDO!!! THIS is the reason why Han shot Greedo first!!! You can take your non-anamorphic HAN SHOT FIRST crappy DVD's and eat it! You have become the evil Emperor your films have always warned us against and that makes you a hypocrite! I will be boycotting these DVD's with a Rebel Blockade until you preserve the originals with the artistic integrity and respect they rightfully deserve for history's sake.

Gone he is... Consumed by the Dark Side!

Yoda would be ashamed!

Quote:

I loved these three original films and had to endure three of the worst films, or so called back stories to these classics. Yet another strike comes to multiple re-release after re-release of substandard remasters of the three great originals. Lucas, the one time great filmaker is found guilty of greed and he has turned his back on the fans that once followed his every move with great loyalty. Now all that are left are these small brained people that are turned on by any piece of crap flashing in front of their eyes. Go ahead and buy this if you want, I've decided to take any copies of these films I own and find some sucker on e-bay to buy them.

Quote:

Listen, I have boycotted every release of the SW trilogy that has been released since 1997. I can't remember the last time I saw the original editions. I have nothing to lose at this point. I've held out for years for this moment and I'm going for it.

Nobody is holding a gun to anyone's heads...if you don't want it, DON'T BUY IT! Lucas does not have some magical power to make you spend your money.

I made the decision to wait until the originals were released...it's called willpower. I refused to give Lucas my money for the special editions when what I really wanted was the originals. I didn't know if Lucas was ever going to release the originals...but now that it's here, I don't feel the need to wait anymore.

But keep complaining if you want, I'm not listening and I don't think Lucas cares!

Most of you are complaining cause you know that you'll cave and spend your money AGAIN just like you caved in all the previous times when you spent your money on what you knew to be subpar merchandise.

This is the one time I'm purchasing this item. If Lucas comes out with the originals next year with remastered digital whatever, he can keep it...or re-sell it to the rest of you since HE knows you'll buy anything SW that he sells.

Quote:

Yes your absoultuley right the specs. are not what they should be but get over it. You all seem to be missing the point this is the oppurtunity for the 90 plus percent of us with out laser disc players to own the unaltered star wars trilogy on a format that will not deteriate over time. In truth in five years the sound would still be terrible by comparison to that of the current day, and as for the lack of anamorphic wide screen WHO CARES!!! Truth be told I'm willing to bet there's a good deal of you who don't even own a widescreen TV. I swear Star Wars fans are like children begging for toys give them a Han Solo and they want a Chewbacca with it. Give them the Chewbacca they want a Luke and an X-wing. And if you give them that two then they want the Millenium Falcon. Stop complaining about the specs. If they were up to par they'd still be obsolete in two years. This is about the film which doesn't need any bells or whistles to sell it that's what makes it timeless.

So, did any one buy these?

I was in Wal Mart today and saw "Star Wars" (not "Episode IV, A new hope," "Star Wars") and picked it up.

There are two discs. The "special edition" from about five years ago and a "bonus disc" with the original theatrical version.

I haven't watched either yet.

I never cared for either Empire or Return all that much in any form.

Empire was okay, and the Darth/Luke fight was, of course, awesome but the rest of the film was okay at best for me.

And in my mind, ninety percent of Return sucked ass.

Like I said, I never particularly cared for either sequel.

I find "Empire" watchable but flawed. I've always found "Jedi," other than the Luke/Vader/Emperor interplay, nigh unwatchable.

Therefore, the changes mean little to me one way or another. The only one I find wholly wrongheaded is the idea of removing the great Sebastin Shaw as Anakin Skywalker from the final scene and replacing him with Hayden Christopher.

I watched one of the updated versions of Jedi on MTV tonight. havent seen Jedi in 10 years or so, it still holds up very well. i did find the ending a bit retarded, they replaced the aged anakin ghost with the young adult anakin from the new trilogy, wtf? if thats the case why didnt they use the younger Obi-wan, and a younger yoda?

If I remember correctly, they changed that twice.
I'm sure they changed something when they did the special edition version, then changed it again for DVD.

I think the point they are trying to make is that Anakin essentially died when he was young, so he reverts to the earlier incarnation, where as Yoda and Ben stayed young.

I also think it was just a way of linking the two trilogies together, just like when they shoehorned the two droids into the newer ones!
