Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman go postal

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer 26 minutes ago

Faster than a speeding bullet, comic book superheroes are coming to a post office near you. Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl and a half dozen other superheroes will star on new postage stamps being released Thursday.

The new 39-cent stamps and 24-cent postal cards will be made public at a comic book show in San Diego, and will go on sale nationwide Friday.

The stamps are sold in a sheet of 20, half featuring the individual superheroes and half showing covers of comic books starring them.

The Postal Service reports this is its first set of super hero stamps, indicating more are likely to follow.

Characters featured in the stamps are:

_Batman: Young Bruce Wayne mastered all forms of combat after his parents were killed. He uses his wealth to equip himself with the tools to become the great crime fighter. He made his debut in 1939 and was joined by Robin a year later.

_Wonder Woman: A figure of strength, beauty and courage, she has been inspiring women since her first appearance in 1941.

_Plastic Man: After an accident at a chemical plant gives Eel O'Brian the ability to stretch and alter his shape, he renounces his criminal past and becomes the longest arm of the law. He debuted in 1941.

_Superman: The Man of Steel first appeared in 1938 and has been an icon ever since. Raised in Smallville, the baby from Planet Krypton uses superpowers to battle evil.

_Green Lantern: Launched with the space age, test pilot Hal Jordan became Green Lantern, a galactic peace officer with an emerald power ring.

_The Flash: Police scientist Barry Allen is transformed into the fastest man alive in 1956 by an explosive mixture of lightning and laboratory chemicals.

_Aquaman: The former King of the Seven Seas remains is determined to protect both the Atlanteans and surface dwellers from those who endanger them, using his strength, speed and ability to communicate with marine life.

_Hawkman: He has artificial wings powered by the mysterious "Nth metal" which allow him to soar through the sky in pursuit of evildoers. He is a master of ancient weapons.

_Supergirl: Superman's cousin arrives on Earth as an impressionable teenager and eventually becomes his secret weapon.

_Green Arrow: First appearing in 1941, the Emerald Archer learns his skills while trapped on a desert island. He later escapes to become a modern Robin Hood.

I am excited about these new stamps! I want them! It's about time the Post office made superhero stamps!

Haven't been this interested in stamps since they made stamps of space exploration back in the early 80's after the successes of Voyagers 1 & 2. I still have a stamp of Voyager 1 at Saturn around here, somewhere.....

1998 was a bad year for me..I don't recall much from that year,.....were they REALLY Superman stamps.... or were they just stamps of Elvis dressed in a Superman suit?

You have it all wrong, Ray.

I was so impressed by BSAMS's thread that I went to the trouble of finding pics of the stamps to contribute to this very thread. Since, unlike some people (and, by the way, where's my fucking soda?), I didn't want to resort to "googling" the pics I went to the nearest source for them which, coincidentally, just happened to be right here at the RKMBs.

Stop trying to divide the boards, Ray with your cruel falsehoods. Instead, bring us together with ice cold drinks, as is your job.

I bought a sheet. They're pretty cool. There's a blurb about the hero or comic represebted on the backing of the stamp - neat!

I like the Superman and Batman stamps but some of the other ones on the sheets look like crap.

Besides, I've got better things to spend my stamp money on.

Reminiscent of his landslide re-election to a second term as President of the United States in 1984, Ronald Reagan won overwhelming support as the stamp in his honor was “re-elected” in its new 39-cent denomination this week.

“Ronald Reagan’s record is proof that one person, determined and dedicated, can shoulder the greatest of burdens and carry them through to victory — and in his case, even make it look easy,” said Board of Governors Chair James Miller, who dedicated the stamp. Miller served as Reagan’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, and later chaired the Federal Trade Commission.

The Reagan stamp was first issued Feb. 9, 2005, as a 37-cent commemorative stamp.

“Reissuing a commemorative U.S. presidential stamp in a higher denomination is a very rare occurrence,” said Reagan Library Foundation Executive Director R. Duke Blackwood. “Mrs. Reagan is touched that the Postal Service is honoring her husband in this manner.”

The stamp was dedicated Wednesday in Simi Valley, CA
