It was a disappointment to the studio because it didn't turn out to be the Star Wars level cultural phenomenon they hoped it would be, not because it didn't make any money at the box office.

Its been said that a movie has to make twice its production budget to be considerd a "success." SR didn't do that. According to Box Office Mojo, SR's total world wide gross was $391,081,192. Its production buget, however, was approximately $270 million.

Yes, they will. Not to mention, they were going to take a bath on it anyway, considering all the non-start money they spent on Tim Burton, Nicholas Cage, and the lead ups to Singer making his movie.
