A while ago I started a thread on the DCMBs asking what DVDs they'd recommend. To stay on-topic (Hi Rob [biiiig grin] ) I asked what comic-related DVDs people liked. In the thread I mentioned that I'd be using a PS2 as a DVD player. Several posters said that PS2s weren't good players while others said they were.

Does anybody here want to weigh in on whether or not PS2s are good DVD players?

why hello there, 552.

thats a nifty thread y'got there. ill keep my eye on it [wink]

the truth of the matter is, the ps2 is not a good dvd player.

above and beyond the remote issues, the ps2 dvd player is a very slow model (a 1 or 2 speed, i believe) and is a design which is over 3 years old at this point.

considering it was, at one point, at least, a $100 extra (seeing as how the two game systems with a dvd player were 100 more than the one without, at least before this summer), its a very poor deal, since you can get a separate, top of the line dvd player for about that much.

but, lets get realistic here...

can you watch movies on it? yeah. are you REALLY that interested in it being the best, or most reliable or top notch or whatever?

probably not. in most cases, id wager, those who use it and arent specifically looking for the best thing are fine with it.

thats really all that matters.

its the same deal with, say, a CD player. if you get a $40 cd player, thats exactly what you have -- a machine that plays your cds for $40

compared to a $300 cd player, of course its gonna sound like crap, but... it still plays your cds, and if thats good enuf for you, then be happy with it.

and there y'go :)

My brother uses his as a DVD player, and seeing as though he hasn't complained yet...I'd say it's an okay player. Word to the wise though, do NOT hook it up to a VHS player. The brightness will fade in and out during the whole movie (happens with all DVD players).

Thanks, everyone who responded.

As I stated in the original DCMB thread, I had intended to buy a PS2 after Christmas, but that won't be happening....because I got one as a Christmas present!!! [biiiig grin] [biiiig grin] [biiiig grin]

Well gotta go play Tekken Tag Tournament now.... :)
