Cashman will speak with Rivera

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
February 13, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Mariano Rivera spoke softly, and the New York Yankees got the message.

A day after the All-Star closer said "if they don't give the respect that I deserve, I have to move on," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he intends to speak with Rivera -- but would not necessarily offer a contract extension beyond 2007.

Rivera seldom says anything controversial, and his remarks dominated the back pages -- and in one case, the front page -- of Tuesday's tabloids in New York.

"Mo knows how we feel about him. We care a great deal about him. He's been a great Yankee," Cashman said Tuesday. "Obviously there's a contract in place that we worked out a while before. Let me talk to him first. In theory I would always prefer to wait. Right now I want to concentrate on '07 and worry about '08 at another time. When that time will be, that would be between me and Mo."

Rivera and catcher Jorge Posada are entering the final seasons of their contracts and are eligible for free agency after the World Series. Rivera will earn $10.5 million this season, completing a deal that pays him $31.5 million over three years.

"The Yankees always give me the respect," Rivera said Monday. "When the time comes, if they want me back, they want me back. Otherwise, I'm not going to sit in my house crying. I have to move on."

Cashman said the one time he spoke with Rivera during the offseason, the 37-year-old didn't bring up his contract situation. Rivera's agent and Cashman did have one conversation about an extension.

"Every situation has a proper time and a proper place," Cashman said. "My preference is to wait throughout the year on everybody, if I possibly can. We have a lot of people up. I'm going to talk Mariano first, have a conversion with him to see where he's at."

Torre attempting to reach out to Williams

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
February 13, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Yankees manager Joe Torre is trying to reach Bernie Williams and left the impression that the outfielder would have a chance to make New York's roster if he accepts a minor league contract and comes to spring training.

"Who knows? That's the one thing about being down here," Torre said Tuesday after his opening staff meeting of training camp. "You don't know. You're going to leave here with the team that you want to go north with."

Torre telephoned Williams last week and again on Tuesday but didn't speak with him. Williams said Friday he was leaning against the Yankees' offer of a minor league contract.

"I haven't heard back from him. I'd feel better if I was able to talk to him," Torre said. "I want to see what he's thinking."

While Williams' corner locker in the Yankees' Legends Field clubhouse had no name Saturday, he was listed on a roster pinned to the message board. By Tuesday, a new roster had been posted that omitted Williams' name and left his No. 51 open. Late in the morning, a clubhouse attendant moved Jose Veras' belongings into Williams' locker and put Veras' name above it.

Since Torre took over after the 1995 season, Williams has been one of the manager's favorites. Williams helped the Yankees win four World Series titles and six AL pennants, and is beloved by fans.

New York hasn't offered Williams a major league contract because general manager Brian Cashman built a roster that figures to have 12 pitchers, a platoon at first base of Doug Mientkiewicz and either Andy Phillips or Josh Phelps, and Jason Giambi at designated hitter. That leaves no available spots for Williams, who would be the fifth outfielder.

Asked whether he was sad that Williams didn't appear to be in the team's plans, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner indicated he wasn't involved in the decision.

"That's up to Cashman," he said.

Williams, now 38, lost his starting job in center to Johnny Damon last year but saw considerable playing time due to injuries to Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield. Williams finished with a .281 average, 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 420 at-bats.

"We'll have to see what we have," Torre said. "Sometimes the best-laid plans aren't the ones that really pan out."

Torre tried to meet with Williams several times during the offseason, but the get-togethers were canceled because of illness or travel plans. While Torre was in Hawaii on vacation, he did speak to Williams by telephone.

"He was a little uncomfortable and disturbed about what was going on," Torre said. "You tend I'm sure to feel slighted."

Cashman, speaking in the clubhouse before Torre, said the offer of a minor league contract for Williams remained open. Catcher Jorge Posada said he had spoken with Williams and said Williams still was thinking about the Yankees' offer.

"He's got an opportunity to come in," Cashman said. "We'd love to have him. I respect the fact that he's not interested in doing that. Other than that, there's not a whole lot more I can speak to."

You can tell the media is suffering through super bowl withdrawal when this crap is even remotely mentioned as news. Losing guys that are more or less past their primes after this year isn't exaclty breaking news. And as for Bernie....he's a great guy but he's not better than Melky at this point. Besides he will probably not sign with anyone else and wait for the Yanks to call if they have any injuries.

God help me, I agree with a Yankees fan.

Bernie is (and has been) a class act. But the fact of the matter is, he's in his late 30s, is past his prime, and is blocked at every position he can play by someone better (or more highly paid). I respect his desire to continue playing and keeping in shape in case the Yankees decide they do want him, but I don't see it happening this year.

As for Mo, this is much ado about nothing. My money's on him staying and retiring a Yankee.

Yeah I think Mo will sign too. In fact in today's papers Cashman said a contract is already in place for Mo and Jorge and would have preffered waiting till the end of the year but may sign them sooner to keep them happy.

And like I said before all Yankees fans and pplayers will always love bernie and think the world of him and be forever grateful....but, it's time to maybe move on.

I totally agree. Except I wouldn't mess with Rivera. He's the best there is. Too many veterans can be a bad thing (except for the 2002 Detroit Red Wings), but the right quality veterans can go a long way (like the Tigers having Rogers and Jones).

I may be one of the few Yankees fans that isn't in love with Rivera. He's great yes and has accomplished alot. I have trouble forgiving him for the 2004 collapse against the Red Sox. The Yanks were leading games 4 and 5 in the 9th with him on the mound and he blew it ....twice.

Rivera says he'll consider offers from other teams
Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- Mariano Rivera had this warning for the New York Yankees: If he becomes a free agent, he'll consider offers from other teams.

"Everybody has the same shot," he said Wednesday. "The Yankees will not have an advantage."

Brian Cashman tells ESPN Radio 1050's Michael Kay that a chat with Mariano Rivera cleared the air over the closer's remarks, but confirmed they won't talk new contract until later.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman called the 37-year-old closer Tuesday night, a day after Rivera said he was hoping for a contract extension. Cashman told Rivera his preference is to push back the matter until after the season.

"It's very hard, despite how great Mariano is, to all of a sudden pick and choose who to start discussing contracts with," Cashman said. "If you start picking and choosing one, someone else is sitting there saying, 'Well, why not me?'"

Catcher Jorge Posada also is entering the final season of his contract, and third baseman Alex Rodriguez can opt out of his deal after the World Series.

Rivera, the backbone of the Yankees during their run of nine straight AL East titles, will earn $10.5 million this year, the final season of a three-year agreement. When he was about to enter the final season of his contract in 2004, the Yankees negotiated an extension during spring training.

"The Yankees always knew that I wanted to be with the Yankees and finish my career with the Yankees," he said. "If they don't want to do [anything] with me, I'm not go home crying. I'm going to move on."

He doesn't see himself playing in another uniform.

"But if I have to, I have to do it," he said.

Rivera wants to pitch for the team in the new Yankee Stadium in 2009 and said he wasn't upset with the team's decision. The 37-year-old right-hander doesn't want to discuss his contract during the season.

Last fall, when Mike Mussina was eligible for free agency, the Yankees started talks with his agent soon after their season ended and agreed to a $23 million, two-year deal. It appears likely that if Rivera has a season typical for him, New York will act on a similar timetable.

"We are fine with that," said Rivera's agent, Fernando Cuza.

Rivera was 5-5 with 34 saves and an 1.80 ERA last year, when he was sidelined from Aug. 31 to Sept. 22 because of a muscle strain near his right elbow.

"Maybe they're thinking they've got to wait for me if I'm healthy or not. I don't know what they're thinking," he said.

Manager Joe Torre said Tuesday that he plans to limit Rivera to the ninth inning this season. Torre has said before, then brought in Rivera during tough spots in the eighth.

"Sometimes it's going to be one inning. Sometimes it's going to be two innings. I will never think one inning," Rivera said.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who worked out across the street at the team's minor league complex, wasn't worried.

"Mo ain't going nowhere. Mo will be right here next year. Where is he going to go?" Jeter said with a smile. "I'm just playing. I don't know his situation to be honest. I'm sure he would want an extension. I'd love to have an extension, too. To be honest with you, I didn't even know he was a free agent after this year. I'm sure they'll work it out."

Rivera isn't worried that the Yankees will treat him the same way they've dealt with Bernie Williams, who thus far has refused to accept the team's offer of a minor league contract.

"Bernie's an outfielder. I'm a pitcher," Rivera said. "As a player, we have to understand that this is a business. I do understand this is a business. You don't produce, you go home."

He's placed a few calls to Williams, but hasn't spoken with him.

"I've been trying, but no luck," Rivera said.

Jeter has gotten through to Williams.

"He's been a fixture here since I was in high school. I think that's probably going to be the most awkward thing of the spring, is not having Bernie here," Jeter said. "Bernie had a good year last year. I mean, he wasn't expected to play much last season and then because of injury he found himself in the lineup a lot. He did a great job. Outstanding job. I don't know what the numbers are, I don't know what the situations are, but I wish Bernie was here."

Honestly, like Pete, I'm getting tired of this shit too - with both Mo and Bernie and all the players out there in general. I know that baseball (hell, all sports) is a business, but what happened to loyalty and playing for the love of the game? Yeah, I know, naïve, but -I don't give a fuck - I felt that way about Damon too when he left the Sox bc apparently 40 million wasn't enough to catch a fucking ball - and he was coming to the Yankees and I still feel this way...had he shown loyalty and accepted Boston's offer and basically acted like it was about the game and that Boston was it he would've been lifted from "hero" to "god".

So, I know it sounds naïve that I still wish there was loyalty, but I can't help but feel disgust when professional athletes bitch and moan about the money. You fuckers are getting millions either way for playing baseball. It's not like you're curing fucking cancer.

I know how you both feel. "Respect" is the new way to say "break the bank for me now!!!" Pedro used it against the Red Sox (twice). Damon used it in a more disgusting way (his position was "I'll never play for the Yankees but I deserve more 'respect' than the team captain..."). It's Wily Mo Pena's rallying cry going into arbitration this year (with the added bonus of his agent adding "if the Red Sox want to make Wily Mo feel like part of the team..."). As much as I liked Damon and Pedro on the team, I have to respect the team for not caving into that type of "negotiation". And the team was proven right in Pedro's case.

I still think that the Yankees should re-sign Rivera (I save "Mo" for my suh-weetie!). But it's a shame that he has to sink to this level...

i agree to a point.

i like when players remain on teams for a long time, or their whole career, as it really establishes themselves as a franchise -- something a father, older brother, and younger brother can all sorta grow up with. favre, jeter, ripken, etc; those types are a rarity, in all sports, with the free agent factors and salary explosions.

however, thats just a personal view.

business-wise, and competitively, there doesn't have to be (and in many cases can't or shouldn't be) any form of "loyalty". and that is as true of the player as it is of the team owner.

is favre being loyal to the packers for coming back again? or are the packers being loyal to favre for letting him?

bernie is a great guy, and i would love to see him return to the team and pick up ruben sierra's "off-the-bench" clutch hitter position for a 'low' salary. if he still wants to play is not nearly as important as the fact that he still can.

the fact is, there are teams out there that would pay a few million more than the yanks for a guy like williams and have bernie starting, full-time. smaller market clubs, or clubs in rebuilding years, would love to have a veteran's experience (and ticket/shirt selling power), who could still close in on a 285 average with 20 homers.

knowing that you have a value above what you're receiving is pretty much what every one of us is frustrated with in our own jobs. going a step further and hearing something like "we probably don't need you, at all" is a pretty big blow to the ego, to say the least.

though, granted, i'm with you in the thought of "geebus, you're a brazillionaire. go cry into your golden tissues on your bed made of diamonds while listening to a live orchestra play your favorite sad song."

Pavano Takes Mound and Mussina Takes Aim

By TYLER KEPNER

Published: February 16, 2007

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 15 — Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano threw side by side on the bullpen mounds at Legends Field on Thursday morning. It is safe to assume they did not have dinner together Thursday night.

Many of the Yankees still question the competitive drive of Pavano, who has collected roughly $20 million the past two seasons but has not pitched in the majors in 598 days. Just because Pavano is back on a mound does not mean Mussina gives him the benefit of the doubt.

“Do I?” Mussina said. “No, not just yet. I want to see that he wants to do it.”

That crystallized the prevailing view of Pavano among his teammates. They would love to see him pitch. But they are not sure he really wants to.

“He needs to take it upon himself to really want it,” catcher Jorge Posada said. “We’ll see.”

Pavano’s litany of injuries — shoulder, back, buttocks, elbow — became a clubhouse joke last August, when he injured his ribs in a car accident in Florida and failed to tell the team. Teammates mocked Pavano by papering his locker with back pages from New York tabloids. But Pavano never saw it; he was rarely in New York last season.

Still, Pavano said Thursday that his problems in the clubhouse were the creation of the news media. Was he curious as to how teammates would treat him?

“I didn’t think it was going to be that much,” he told reporters Thursday, the Yankees’ first full day of workouts for pitchers and catchers. “I thought it more was hyped up by you guys than everybody else. I have a relationship with all my teammates and conversation with all my teammates.”

Yet Manager Joe Torre said Tuesday that Pavano had a sizable amount of work to do in the clubhouse. When reminded of that, Pavano stayed on message.

“Joe has his opinions on it, but I didn’t come in here nervous that my teammates were going to oust me or give me the cold shoulder,” Pavano said. “Definitely, there’s respect to be earned, but other things that were said, I think, were just things that you guys all had a lot of fun with.”

Pavano and General Manager Brian Cashman have maintained that all of Pavano’s injuries were legitimate. Mussina, who spoke calmly and pointedly about Pavano for several minutes, was not so sure.

“It didn’t look good,” Mussina said. “From a player’s perspective and a teammate’s perspective, it didn’t look good. Was everything just a coincidence? Over and over again? I don’t know.”

The Yankees’ clubhouse, like any, is filled with players who handle discomfort. Scott Proctor led the league in games pitched last season despite a clicking sensation in his elbow. The departed Randy Johnson pitched through constant back pain. Center fielder Johnny Damon played with a broken toe. Mussina pitched with elbow pain in 2005.

“That’s one of the factors,” Mussina said, explaining the clubhouse chill toward Pavano. “That’s how you’re perceived by your teammates, where one guy is out there playing the game despite what’s going on, and someone else is not. That’s how teammates get a bad taste in their mouths.

“If he takes the ball and goes out there and pitches and does the things he’s supposed to be doing, it’ll go away. It’ll go away, because we’re all in this together. We want him to pitch. We need him to pitch.”

Mussina had not expressed those feelings to Pavano, and he was not sure when, or if, he would. Pavano had no plans to address his teammates, and Mussina said they would not want to hear him, anyway.

“Saying something doesn’t mean much to me,” Mussina said. “Actions speak louder than words. I just want him to go out and do what he’s supposed to be doing.”

So does everyone, especially Torre, who urged Pavano to be in the clubhouse when the Yankees visited Tampa Bay last September. Torre explained to Pavano then that he must win back the respect of his teammates. Evidence to the contrary, Torre said he believed his message got through.

“He understands that,” Torre said. “It may not be automatic, but I think over time, during spring training, he can gain that trust and respect back from the players that I know they wish they had the last couple of years.”

INSIDE PITCH

The Yankees will wear black armbands this season in honor of pitcher Cory Lidle, who died in an October plane crash. ... Manager Joe Torre said that his brother, Frank, needs a kidney transplant. Frank Torre, a former major leaguer, had a heart transplant during the 1996 World Series. “His heart is already on its 11th year now,” Joe Torre said. “With all the medication you have to take, the rest of the organs take a beating.” Torre said his brother, who is 75, will know more next week about when he might get a new kidney.

Torre to Bernie: We want you

By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
February 15, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Joe Torre spoke to Bernie Williams and the message from the New York Yankees manager was clear: Come to spring training.

Williams, feeling slighted by the only major league team he's played for, has thus far refused to accept a minor league contract. After Torre left some telephone messages, the 38-year-old outfielder called back on Wednesday afternoon.

"The only thing I stressed to him yesterday is: `If you want to continue to play, you can't do it if you stay up there. We have to see you,"' Torre said Thursday.

Torre said that if Williams does come to spring training, he would have a real chance of earning a spot on the Yankees' 25-man roster

"It doesn't mean you have to hit .400," Torre said. "I think it's what you see more so than what the numbers are."

Williams has been one of Torre's favorites and helped the Yankees win four World Series and six AL pennants. Williams said last week that he was leaning against accepting the minor league contract but said he hadn't made up his mind.

"Yeah, it would be tough for me if you had to say goodbye," Torre said. "I sense he feels confident that he can still play this game."

Williams lost his starting job in center field to Johnny Damon last year. Because of injuries to Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield, Williams played a lot and hit .281 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIs in 420 at-bats.

New York doesn't currently have room for Williams because it plans to carry 12 pitchers, use Jason Giambi as a designated hitter and platoon Doug Mientkiewicz at first base with either Josh Phelps or Andy Phillips.

"If we see Jason as a first baseman, that all of a sudden opens up a spot," Torre said.

Torre spoke with Williams for about 20 minutes and planned to talk with him again in the next day or so.

"It's tough for him to feel wanted if it means getting spot on the 40-man roster at this point in time because there's no room," Torre said.

"I think we have to think more in terms of: `You come down and compete for a job and don't worry about the numbers,"' he said.
