I don't see why being white or Irish should be shameful.

Well, I don't have a problem with being white anyway. But American Dad and Family Guy are littered with 'rich white folk' jokes as well as slovenly Irish satire.
Taking under consideration that he's both white and Irish (and probably makes a shit-load more money than me), I'm led to believe he hates himself with extreme prejudice.

I dunno. The more diverse races, ethnic groups, sexually obsessed, and lower class individuals always end up being tragic or "misunderstood" in his stories.

Just look at, for example, the "Asian News Reporter." There's nothing tragic or misunderstood about her. It's true that McFarlane is of Irish desecent and sure loves to rag on the Irish. However, I've never known a dedicated Irishman who didn't enjoy portraying himself and his people as a bunch of boozy goofballs. If MacFarlane's characterization of the Irish makes him self loathing, the same could be said pretty much every Irish folk singer and John "the Quiet Man" Ford. About the only aspect of MacFarlane I could see someone calling him "self loathing" on would be his Catholicism. But since I suspect that he's a lapsed Catholic I wouldn't call that self-loathing either.

Probably because the Japanese have been more or less successful at actually integrating with American culture. MacFarlane only seems to want to go after the ones that don't have a problem with the boiling pot (see also: Stan telling his wife's adoptive Chinese parents to "assimilate already").
