Comic Book Resources: Horror filmmaker and best-selling "Bloodshot" writer Kevin VanHook returns to comics for “Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves,” and spoke with CBR News about the project.

I really dislike "Superman vs Vampire" stories. The guy has heat vision which is supposedly concentrated solar energy. A Superman/Vampire fight should last all of thirty seconds.

I know that the writers always pull out the "but vampires are magic" argument. However, that still doesn't work. Even with their 'magic' powers, vampires wilt in the face of good, old, normal sunlight.

The only story of this type that every worked for me was the "Skeeter" story that John Byrne and Art Adams did 20 years ago because that was supposedly the first time that Superman met a vampire and one could understand why he had trouble dealing with them: his inexperience.

The problem with Superman is his gay morals.
Even though they are "undead" he would not use his heat vision, as he would see this as killing them.

Batman is actually able to differentiate, but Supes is just too much of a big gay boyscout, and would want to cure them.

You could also say that the heat vision is different from actual solar rays, as it has been metabolised by his body.
Just the same as solar panels are used to power electrical goods etc, its not actually solar energy that ends up running through your tv set to power it.

When you have to break out your two corporate cows to have a special "fight" with two generic, antiquated 'horror' characters, you know you have run out of ideas...

Especially when both cows have done these types of fights multiple times over the past sixty-plus years.

Hell, Batman alone has tussled with more vampires than VanHelsing.

Superman only really works in sci-fi mode. Fighting 1920s stock villains is dumb.

I think a Superman vs Vampire story could work. But it would have to be less of a "magic vampire out to bite Superman" slugfest and more of a cat and mouse story where the vamp spends most of the adventure evading Clark's supersenses and threatening his friends, culminating in Superman using science/his powers to win in a logical way.

There was once a Superman story where Superman was bitten by a vampire. The specifics elude me, but I think it was something along with the vampire biting supes, and then proceeded with dying because superman is a big solarbattery.

I'm pretty sure that was a Loeb story. Seriously.

Why, yes, it was.

I gotta admit, I sort of like the idea of a vampire not being able to digest Kal's Kryptonian blood. However, that one good idea does not a good story make, especially since-logically-his solar blood should have killed (or at least cured) the Werewolves in the first part of the story.

Furthermore, it begs the question: as soon as Superman knew the guy was a Vampire why the fuck didn't he fly Lois and Jimmy home instead of spending the night there? Basically, Superman is dumber than a character in "Scream" at that point.

Johns co-wrote. No wonder grumpy old man Pro liked it so much.

The Churchill and Rapmund artwork was the only reason I kept the issue.
