Pirates of old were known for sailing in uncharted (and dangerous) waters but Warner Bros. and the Spierig brothers are taking the pirate genre into an entirely new landscape. Variety reports that Michael and Peter Spierig are set to direct a new version of 1935 swashbuckling classic Captain Blood, and plan to update the story sci-fi style in a space setting. After working with the brothers on a first draft, screenwriter John Brownlow has been tasked with fleshing out the complete screenplay.
After WB and producer Bill Gerber dusted off the library title and had Brownlow do a faithful first draft, they sought out pitches from filmmakers. The Spierig siblings won the gig with a bold animatic presentation, Gerber said.
"At first, I felt like I was in that scene in 'The Player,' where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to 'The Graduate,'" said Gerber. "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it.'"
Plot Concept: Despite the change to space, the film's story will be fairly faithful to the original plot in which the doctor, Peter Blood, joins up with a French pirate (played in the original by Basil Rathbone), only to clash with the buccaneer when the woman he loves (Olivia de Havilland) is captured by the pirate skipper.
The Spierig brothers also has the vampire film Daybreakers set to hit theaters January 8, 2010. You can check out the first trailer for that film here.
