I'm a fan of good Sci-fi. There is a lot of junk out there that just uses the Sci-fi background to that they can have pretty effects and pull in some dough. I prefer my SF to have something more, though, I admit that I do fall for some of the flash and glitz every now and then.

Starship Troopers-I agree is one of the best. I loved the novel by Heinlein better, but the film makers admitted that they just used his novel as a basis to do a tribute to big bug movies of the '50's. If you admit that you're just an FX/big budget movie right out front, I can't fault you.

Gattica Perfect example of pure Sci-fi. It told an important story about how technology effects our lives and the consequences. Really good story with really good acting.

The Day the Earth Stood Still Can't believe you didn't beat me to this one, Animalman. A classic black and white film directed by Robert Wise ( Sound of Music and West Side Story to name a few). Once again a message about technology. Specifically our use of nuclear weapons. A great speech at the end that basically says, "If you fuck up, we'll kill ya." It's required viewing if you're into SF.

Screamers This one stars Peter Weller (of Robocop fame), and I think it's based off a Phillip K. Dick story. I think it was a direct to video flick, but it's still pretty good.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn I'm not much of a Trekkie, but this one is damn good. Better than that piece of garbage first one (too bad it was directed by Robert Wise. Hate to see bad things happen to good people). The best in the whole series.

Conan the Barbarian This is an awesome movie. I really like the direction that John Milius took with it. He was smart enough to dump the whole mutant pigs and shit that were in Oliver Stone's script knowing that it couldn't be pulled off right and went for a more "historical" look. The DVD is great because in the commentary with John and Arnold, Arnold is kissing John's ass hoping the director will save his career.

That's it for now. Animalman mentioned a good chunck of the ones I like already. Terry Gilliam fan, eh, Animalman?

The special effects were extraordinary, I wouldn't doubt that, but for me the story itself has to be somewhat interesting as well. This movie was a slap in the face of a fantastic piece of literature in Robert Heinlein's book.

Ah, great movie, one of my favorites of all time. I guess I don't think of it as a science fiction really, but I suppose you're right.

Yes, I must have been sleep or something, I can't believe I missed this one.

The Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet are the golden age gems of science fiction, two of my all time favorites.

Ah, another classic. Ricardo Montalban's performance has to be one of the best villain roles in movie history, loved the Moby Dick quoting at the end.

"..from hell's heart, I stab at thee......"

Aww man, I forgot about this one too! This was a fantastic movie, loved the Conan series, even the Destroyer, which didn't receive as high praise. The soundtrack was also really amazing.

Indeed. I didn't get "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" at all(had to read the book to even understand remotely what was going on), but Time Bandits, Twelve Monkeys and Brazil are all fantastic movies. Terry Gilliam is the master of mindfuck.

wow, i cant believe you guys liked dark city.

i remember waiting for it to come out, cuz the buildings looked all cool and "gothicy"... but man... when i saw it, i was miserable.

i loves me some terminator @). i dig the matrix. lord of the rings, princess bride.

i've never been a huge star wars buff. tho i liked the initial series (first three movies released), i wouldnt count them amongst my favorites.

i remmeber going to see gremlins for birthday parties -- and everyone having a kick-ass gizmo trapper keeper (cool!)

cant think of others im into right now.
