I finished my Grant Morrison JLA collections last week by picking up his final trade, World War III. This is what the entire run was leading up to, the coming of Mageddon. This is supposed to be the greatest story Grant will ever tell.
And for the most part, it is. Until you get to the end of the last part... where the entire conflict is resolved by Superman's high willpower in two pages. I mean, how anti-climatic can you get? I loved the rest of the story, but wow that ending sucked. Was anyone else let down by it?

I loved WWIII. The ending was a tad hokey, but there were enough great moments to make up for it.

I agree with Rorschach here. He's a detective, you know.

Oh, Franty. You're so cute when you're confused...
WWIII's ending was not bad. It certainly wasn't as bad as CRISIS TIMES FIVE....that DID, indeed, blow balls. Every single other detail about Grant's JLA run was, however, absolutely flawless. The Connor Hawke/Key story. Rock of Ages. The Zauriel stuff. Loved it all.

A POX ON YOUR HOUSE, O'GRIMM!!
Besides, that wasn't Grant's fault. That was just DC trying to boost sales with another crap Bat-character... ![[wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)

I thought Crisis Times Five was ok, mainly because Grant used the Atom in it, and I'll be damned if Grant didn't make the Atom a great character. His final fight in Rock of Ages was spectacular.

Was he? I don't remember him in that story. He was in the Julian September story.

Grant managed to turn around a lot of characters that no one cared about during his run on JLA. He made Aquaman moderately cool (for a guy who, up to this point, really just talked to fish) and really took some time to do some great things with the secondary characters of the book, like Atom, Plastic Man, Steel, Green Arrow, and several others that I really can't think of right now.
And, in some cases, WW3 was the culmination of these efforts. If you follow Morrison's run closely, you'll notice that, from issue #1, Grant loved the dichotomy of Superman and Batman, making it the best ending (in his mind) for his run on JLA - having Superman and Batman working together to defeat the Anti-Sun. A lot of Grant's other efforts saw fruition in that story as well - Wonder Woman attaining her mission and leading the armies of man, Kyle proving himself as the "true" GL by overcoming Mageddon's control of his ring with just his willpower, Flash racing off and finding The Glimmer, Plas and Steel devising a plan to take out the Queen Bee, ad infinitum.
In many ways, WW3 was the climax of Grant's enitre JLA run. And, to a great extent, it was everything he made it out to be - a great story that summed up the whole of his experience on JLA. And, while I was disappointed in some of WW3, as a whole, it was a phenomenal story!

He made Steel a cool and functionable member of the JLA. He's the only writer who's actually written Kyle Rayner well (imho). And he brought Plastic Man in (finally!). WW3 was, as Chewy stated, the culmination of everything he began when he started his run.
If he had one real problem during his run, it would be too many recurring plot devices, such as villains breaking into the Watchtower, the JLA almost being fully defeated, Batman saves everyone at the end, etc. His overuse of many of these devices, keeps WW3 from being as powerful to many of us as it should be. My own personal opinion being that Rock of Ages is his best JLA work, but that's another thread.

We can just keep it on this thread. I agree though. Rock of Ages was simply the greatest Justice League story I've ever read. And I agree about him making Kyle bad-ass... I always used to wonder why people bitched about him being GL (I had only read him written by Grant). But then I read the main Green Lantern title and I see what they mean...

Actually, Morrison's interpretation of Aquaman is the one PAD introduced in the Aquaman book in the mid 90's.

I agree, Chewster. I really liked WW3 as Morrison's big going away bash, and not just for the JLA, but for his days at DC as a whole. The tie-in for all the storylines and characters he'd built up during his run. Really, my only complaint was that I wished Aztek could have gotten a better death.

No, the September story was one of Waid's fill-ins. Another story to make good use of the Atom.

Correctamundo! Aquaman started out really strong in the early JLA stuff, then kinda just faded into the background.
I thought the bit where he reached into Zum's brain in the New World Order arc and just shut it down was very clever. And that's why I say he takes Namor down any day of the week. ![[woooOOOOoooo!]](graemlins/smilewoo.gif)
