How many children you have and their ages weighs in on the equation. Also your location, for example where I live you can get a great house for 150k, a lot of Doctors and lawyers from the city locate here just for the enormity of a house they can get for a fraction of the price.

I would say if your net worth is over 2 million you are rich. But I think the middle class ends in the 250k mark, you aren't rich at 250k a year, a minor disaster could bankrupt you, but you rent living on the edge.

The median income where I live is 30k a year, and the average family is three, so poverty level is the norm around here.
