Media Matters for America has noted, Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in "if necessary"; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a "gangland figure" to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap "leftist guerillas" at the 1972 Republican National Convention -- a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.) During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Liddy has donated $5,000 to McCain's campaigns since 1998, including $1,000 in February 2008. In addition, McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show during the presidential campaign, including as recently as May. An online video labeled "John McCain On The G. Gordon Liddy Show 11/8/07" includes a discussion between Liddy and McCain, whom Liddy described as an "old friend." During the segment, McCain praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great," said he was "proud" of Liddy, and said that "it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program."

Additionally, in 1998, Liddy reportedly held a fundraiser at his home for McCain. Liddy was reportedly scheduled to speak at another fundraiser for McCain in 2000. The Charlotte Observer reported on January 23, 2000, that McCain's campaign vouched for Liddy's "character":

His [McCain's] campaign officials said Liddy's character will appeal to many voters because he was following orders from President Nixon and kept silent afterward.

"His (Liddy's) judgment might be in question, but I don't think his character is," said Ed Walker, the York County chairman of McCain's campaign. "He was following orders just like any good soldier, and he didn't tell on anybody. He felt like he was on a mission and kept his silence."

from your post MEM it appears your not up to speed on what Ayers did, here's an article from a man who was a little child when Ayer's Weathermen firebombed his home:

http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0430jm.html

 Quote:
During the April 16 debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, moderator George Stephanopoulos brought up “a gentleman named William Ayers,” who “was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that.” Stephanopoulos then asked Obama to explain his relationship with Ayers. Obama’s answer: “The notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was eight years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn’t make much sense, George.” Obama was indeed only eight in early 1970. I was only nine then, the year Ayers’s Weathermen tried to murder me.

In February 1970, my father, a New York State Supreme Court justice, was presiding over the trial of the so-called “Panther 21,” members of the Black Panther Party indicted in a plot to bomb New York landmarks and department stores. Early on the morning of February 21, as my family slept, three gasoline-filled firebombs exploded at our home on the northern tip of Manhattan, two at the front door and the third tucked neatly under the gas tank of the family car. (Today, of course, we’d call that a car bomb.) A neighbor heard the first two blasts and, with the remains of a snowman I had built a few days earlier, managed to douse the flames beneath the car. That was an act whose courage I fully appreciated only as an adult, an act that doubtless saved multiple lives that night.

I still recall, as though it were a dream, thinking that someone was lifting and dropping my bed as the explosions jolted me awake, and I remember my mother’s pulling me from the tangle of sheets and running to the kitchen where my father stood. Through the large windows overlooking the yard, all we could see was the bright glow of flames below. We didn’t leave our burning house for fear of who might be waiting outside. The same night, bombs were thrown at a police car in Manhattan and two military recruiting stations in Brooklyn. Sunlight, the next morning, revealed three sentences of blood-red graffiti on our sidewalk: FREE THE PANTHER 21; THE VIET CONG HAVE WON; KILL THE PIGS.

For the next 18 months, I went to school in an unmarked police car. My mother, a schoolteacher, had plainclothes detectives waiting in the faculty lounge all day. My brother saved a few bucks because he didn’t have to rent a limo for the senior prom: the NYPD did the driving. We all made the best of the odd new life that had been thrust upon us, but for years, the sound of a fire truck’s siren made my stomach knot and my heart race. In many ways, the enormity of the attempt to kill my entire family didn’t fully hit me until years later, when, a father myself, I was tucking my own nine-year-old John Murtagh into bed.

Though no one was ever caught or tried for the attempt on my family’s life, there was never any doubt who was behind it. Only a few weeks after the attack, the New York contingent of the Weathermen blew themselves up making more bombs in a Greenwich Village townhouse. The same cell had bombed my house, writes Ron Jacobs in The Way the Wind Blew: A History of the Weather Underground. And in late November that year, a letter to the Associated Press signed by Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers’s wife, promised more bombings.

As the association between Obama and Ayers came to light, it would have helped the senator a little if his friend had at least shown some remorse. But listen to Ayers interviewed in the New York Times on September 11, 2001, of all days: “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” Translation: “We meant to kill that judge and his family, not just damage the porch.” When asked by the Times if he would do it all again, Ayers responded: “I don’t want to discount the possibility.”

Though never a supporter of Obama, I admired him for a time for his ability to engage our imaginations, and especially for his ability to inspire the young once again to embrace the political system. Yet his myopia in the last few months has cast a new light on his “politics of change.” Nobody should hold the junior senator from Illinois responsible for his friends’ and supporters’ violent terrorist acts. But it is fair to hold him responsible for a startling lack of judgment in his choice of mentors, associates, and friends, and for showing a callous disregard for the lives they damaged and the hatred they have demonstrated for this country. It is fair, too, to ask what those choices say about Obama’s own beliefs, his philosophy, and the direction he would take our nation.

At the conclusion of his 2001 Times interview, Ayers said of his upbringing and subsequent radicalization: “I was a child of privilege and I woke up to a world on fire.”

Funny thing, Bill: one night, so did I.

I know you likely didn't realize it at the time you posted this and likely feel bad comparing a crook to a terrorist.

Show me where McCain started his political career in Liddy's home. Show me where McCain worked with Liddy on a long term project. Show me where Liddy is one of McCain's mentors and then your pathetic fallacy might have a point.

You do understand that I didn't see the Ayers connection really being that significant & that my judgement of McCain's character isn't changed because he's buddies (like Obama is buddies with Ayers) with a guy who plotted to kill, kidnap & firebomb decades ago? I'm merely posting this because you guys have made a big deal about Ayers while McCain has his very own version.

No need for me to edit my posts G-man. Liddy's plots to kill, kidnap & firebomb are comparable to the stuff Ayers did. Both Libby & Ayers had fundraisers for their respective candidates, although McCain has recieved much more campaign money.

The comparisson starts to break down though when Obama denounced Ayers while McCain does Liddy's radio show where a guy who plotted to kill, kidnap & firebomb greets McCain as his "old friend".

Perhaps it's time for McCain to stop taking Liddy's money & do some denouncing of his own?

No but McCain has kept in contact with this felon & hasn't condemned his actions while accepting his campaign money & doing his radio show. Perhaps now that McCain is playing up Ayers a reporter might question McCain about Liddy?

I think it would be great to hear a public discussion about Ayers and Liddy. As I said earlier the public's perception of Liddy is pretty much been established, so old ground can be rehashed, but I'd like to see more people educated on Obama's buddy William Ayers.

I think you'll get your wish since McCain's campaign apparantly now wants to try to distract voters with Ayers since they can't win on the issues. It's sort of sad because I remember seeing a McCain from the 2000 campaign that was really hurt by the things the Bush campaign had done to him. Yet at this point I can't see any chance of him winning unless he goes this route.

And like I said, I knew of Liddy but not of the various plots. It would be easy to use some passages from Liddy's book talking about plans to kill, kidnap & firebomb to make a political ad that would end with Liddy introducing McCain as his old friend from one of the times he had him as a guest on his radio show.

But if there is nothing wrong with Obama's relationship with Ayer's why does it bother you? If there is nothing there as you say, it will bury McCain. Seems to me you know the real truth and because it will hurt your candidate, you want the truth suppressed.

I haven't said you shouldn't talk about Ayers or that there isn't anything there bsams. I think there's been a lot of exagerating being done trying to tie the two closer than they are but that's a given around election time. Heck I even recognize that's what McCain probably has to do for a chance to win. But that will probably end up working against him as his associations will get more play.

Yes you did, you implied it was playing dirty. If McCain is talking about perfectly acceptable relationships that aren't bad in your opinion, how is that dirty?

I think we probably should stick to what I actually posted. From my experience when the word implied is used there follows a twisted version of what I meant.

But I can see where dirty is implied in my post on this. I don't think I would use that word but I do see it as being something less than talking about the issues. In McCain's case it looks to me like a way to distract voters from the economic issue in particular. As I said I recognize that he probably needs to try to convince as many voters as he can that Ayers & Obama are gay lovers or whatever people are willing to believe at this point for a chance to win. At this point either campaign in the losing spot would get desperate I suspect.

Really? A lot of brainwashed neocons had no problem when Bush curtailed civil liberties and pretty much shit on the Bill of Rights. Wiretapping? Torture? Lying to the American public? A war for oil and profit? This didn't trigger the same response?

But, then again, nevermind right? You guys don't vote Republican....you vote "with your heart and common sense"...right...
