Breathing is made up of two acts that of inhaling (Both oxygen carbon dioxide and god knows what else) and exhaling (Mostly carbon dioxide but some oxygen and other stuff). true enough (This is an odd place to be debating this) But your fact wasn't that excess CO2 would kill you before lack of O2 you stated the primary function of repiration was exhaling CO2 and not inhaling O2. However, stopping breathing is an excellent extreme to take the act of breathing in order to observe the most prominent effect. I don't argue that we must have oxygen. I'm just saying that, apparently, getting rid of CO2 is higher on the ladder of priority. If we didn't get any O2, certainly we would die. However, that would not even be an issue if we didn't FIRST have the means of expelling CO2.
