I think it'd be better if Marvel tackled this kind of story. Barring the utter ridiculousness of Magneto and Dr. Doom crying, someone like Captain America trying to search out Bin Laden would be more suitable, especially since Marvel is a lot similar to the real world than DC, which, coinsedentally, doesnt seem to have a global economy, national infrstructure, or any government at all [if they do have a government, they're all lazy bastards who let super-powered gods run amock, something we know would never happen in the real world, especially since the government would wage all out war on any super-powered hero that threatened their power]

The Marvel U has seen so many skyscrapers knocked over by the Hulk, Galactus etc., and so many innocent people killed by the Red Skull, Dr. Doom, Hydra, et al, I suspect that Sept 11 wouldn't be much of an event for them.

    February 12, 2006 - WonderCon '06: Holy Terror, Batman!
Batman kicks Al Qaeda's ass. Frank Miller's talks about upcoming book.

During his WonderCon panel, Frank Miller discussed his next graphic novel. Once again, Miller returns to the world of the Batman, this time with Holy Terror, Batman!. Though the title plays with Robin's classic catchphrase, the book deals with a serious subject. Gotham has been attacked by Al Qaeda and Batman sets out to defend the city he loves. The book, which Miller has inked through 120 pages, is expected to run roughly 200 pages total.

Miller proudly announced the title of his next Batman book, which he will write, draw and ink. Holy Terror, Batman! is no joke. And Miller doesn't hold back on the true purpose of the book, calling it "a piece of propoganda," where 'Batman kicks al Qaeda's ass."

The reason for this work, Miller said, was "an explosion from my gut reaction of what's happening now." He can't stand entertainers who lack the moxy of their '40s counterparts who stood up to Hitler. Holy Terror is "a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we're up against."

It's been a long time since heroes were used in comics as pure propaganda. As Miller reminded, "Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That's one of the things they're there for."

"These are our folk heroes," Miller said. "It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you've got Al Qaeda out there."

Miller gave warning on our expectations over the visual style of the book. "Be afraid," he said, adding, "I think it's some of the best artwork I've ever done." Miller's career took off with Daredevil, a visual love letter to New York city. In some respects this is an artistic return to his roots. "Gotham City comes under attack, so it involves a lot more industrial landscapes than I've done in years."

"Emotionally, it's really raw," Miller explained. Imagine the powerful rage when someone crosses the "passion between a man and a woman or a man and his city. "

"The Greek's had their Gods and heroes," Miller said. "We have ours." And if you truly consider these characters our mythological figureheads, you have to wonder about their place and purpose in our culture. "What are they there for?" Miller asked, rhetorically. "Are they really going to be saving damned cats from damn trees?"

I'm glad you didn't start a whole new thread to discuss this.

Your right, considering beings like Onslaught who tore down entire NYC districts, or some such shit, but Marvel foloat between the 2 comic spectrums. Government controlling realism [New Avengers, Daredevil, Captain America]etc... and uncontrollable super-powered battles [Thor, some X-titles]

Marvel could still take a deep breath and market it in a very real-World light, similar to Bendis' recent Secret War, where I hear Nick Fury dropped Bruce Banner into a foreign country and pissed him off with a transmitter in order to induce transformation, something suprisingly realistic. Marvel also had that 'Al Tariq' guy from Captain America, something that could be nicely rolled into Caps war on Al Qaeda

"Now TV's all about format these days isn't it, and I've got a new type for you right here. Its me and Paris Hilton driving around in a car.... Now I know what you're thinking, but she's in the boot!" "So you see, 'Ring around the Rosey' refers to the horrible symptoms of a terrifying disease, a disease which.....a disease which....ZIM! Theres a Pigeon on you're head. You have 'Head Pigeons'. get to the Nurse before they spread to the other children." "Get off my lawn Cookie Beast!" --Invader Zim

FRANK MILLER ON NPR'S MORNING EDITION 9/11

Comic book writer and illustrator Frank Miller discusses his upbringing and newfound belief in patriotism and the U.S. flag in an essay for the NPR (National Public Radio) series This I Believe airing on Morning Edition, Monday, September 11. Inspired by newsman Edward R. Murrow’s 1950’s radio program of the same name, This I Believe features Americans from all walks of life expressing their core beliefs and values in short, personal essays.

With his essay, Miller joins an impressive list of essayists including Senator John McCain, skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, magician Penn Jillette, illusionist David Copperfield, Bill Gates and Colin Powell. In addition to airing during Morning Edition, his essay will be available to read and listen to at www.npr.org/thisibelieve on Monday. The website already includes the audio and transcripts for all past essayists as well.

After never fully believing in patriotism and the U.S. flag, Miller discusses how the events of 9/11 shaped his newfound belief in patriotism and the flag. In discussing 9/11, Miller says, “I draw and write comic books. One thing my job involves is making up bad guys. Imagining human villainy in all its forms. Now the real thing had showed up. The real thing murdered my neighbors. In my city. In my country.” Miller adds, “Patriotism, I now believe, isn’t some sentimental, old, conceit. It’s self-preservation. I believe patriotism is central to a nation’s survival.”

As you know, Frank Miller is an acclaimed comic book artist whose titles include “Batman: The Dark Night Returns” and “Sin City.” He is credited as co-director with Robert Rodriguez for the movie adaptation of “Sin City.” In Miller¹s upcoming Batman chronicle, “Holy Terror, Batman,” Batman takes on Osama bin Laden.

I appreciate the sentiment but I still think the book is going to suck all sorts of ass.

And I do think They ought NOT to have BATMAN fight Bin Laden. BAD idea!

Just have him fight someone who could represent terrorism...

.......as if BATMAN does not fight enough people like that already!!

A fast chat with Frank Miller
  • You're working on the graphic novel "Holy Terror, Batman"?

Yes. It's about 40 pages from finished now; it's 122 pages. [Batman is] fighting al-Qaida.

Speaking of which: You engendered some controversy on a radio show, comparing our invading Iraq with our response to Pearl Harbor. Since Iraq didn't attack us, did you really mean to say that?

When the U.S. was attacked at Pearl Harbor, we didn't just declare war on Japan, we declared war on Germany. It was an international fascist effort. And so when I said that the attack on Iraq made sense, it was the same way we had to attack not just Afghanistan. Instead we had to attack the center of Islamofascism.

Germany and Japan were allied; Afghanistan and Iraq aren't. But moving on: I may be your only interviewer who, like you, wrote for Marvel Comics.

We all have our sins in the past.

That's why we live in Sin City!

That's kinda creepy, it's like he made a female clone and fucked it so he could have a mini clone. One wonders who he didn't just make the younger clone right away.

Frank Miller’s ‘Holy Terror’ Takes the Fight to Al Qaeda
  • For years, Frank Miller spoke of a Gotham City graphic novel that would be like no other — for the 120 bone-crunching pages of “Holy Terror, Batman!” Miller — arguably the most important comic book artist of the last 30 years — envisioned a story in which the Caped Crusader went on a blood quest against Al Qaeda.

Earlier this week, sitting over coffee at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego, Miller said the elusive project is finally close to completion but that the name and central character have changed and that DC Comics won’t be the publisher. Miller frames all of this as a decision that was driven by the work itself and not dictated by a DC leadership that, according to insiders, has long been leery of the politically charged concept.

“It’s almost done; I should be finished within a month,” Miller said. “It’s no longer a DC book. I decided partway through it that it was not a Batman story. The hero is much closer to ‘Dirty Harry’ than Batman. It’s a new hero that I’ve made up that fights Al Qaeda.”

Given his track record with the character over the past several years I can't say I'm really disappointed that Miller isn't doing this as a bat-book any more.
