when i make the avatars, i usually reduce them as much as i can, so's that they load up quickly. each image is under 1 inch (72 pixels) tall, and i usually try to make it a gif image with as few colors as possible (the pringles man, i believe has only 7 or 8, which, again, makes the image much faster to download).
