if the "reset" notion is correct, and a chunk o'time was restarted, maybe that chunk wasn't just 3 years (no real reason to think it would be) but 20 or 50 or 100. in that instance, maybe what we saw was jacob visiting a young kate/sawyer, etc
after the events in the season finale.
note how his appearances could indicate things were being changed; like telling james to let go of the anger towards his parent's killer, or telling kate not to be the dumb fuck that gets every body captured all the time. ... er... steal.
