Boston and a new Cincinnati club were charter members of the
National League in 1876. Perhaps in deference to the Cincinnati
history, many people[who?] reserved the "Red Stockings" nickname
for that city with the Boston team commonly referred to as the
"Red Caps" today. Other names were sometimes used before Boston
officially adopted the nickname "Braves" in 1912; that club is
now based in Atlanta, Georgia.
