Troll alert

We're having some difficulty with persistent trolls and we'd like your help.

As some of you know, for the past several years we've been bedeviled by trolls who have created literally hundreds of screen names in violation of SDMB rules. We hoped these people would eventually grow up, graduate, whatever, but so far no luck. In an effort to get the situation under control, we're taking the following steps, some of which involve members of the SDMB.

1. We will ban the trolls’ new screen names and delete posts as quickly as we can, but we can't patrol 24/7 so there may be some delay. Meanwhile, if you see posts that you think are from a troll (for example, a message in ATMB saying “the moderators lie” or “it’s impossible to stop trolls”), please do not reply to them – just report them to the moderators. Responding to trolls, even negatively, only seems to encourage them..

2. Some of you may receive or have already received e-mail from trolls containing taunts and the like. If you have received such a message, we would appreciate your promptly sending a copy to the Straight Dope webmaster in its entirety, including header. The trolls use numerous screen names and e-mail addresses but generally we can recognize them. Such e-mail will help us persuade ISPs to revoke the trolls’ accounts.

3. If any SDMB user who's a lawyer would care to handle a little legal work pro bono, please send a note to edzotti@aol.com. The Chicago Reader, owner of this site, has used up its SD legal budget defending our copyrights (we've got problems all over), and some ISPs will only respond to formal legal requests.

Thanks for your help and patience.
Hehehe I think they're onto you. You've got them scared.
