And as for Bardams character, he was a killer so it was just his status quo, not pointless for him as thats exactly how he lives his life.
To him everything is pretty much black and white, you live or die, and he just sees himself as being part of the process.

Brolin was a family man (or sorts) who saw the money as a get rich quick scheme, and got involved in something he was not used to.
He was taking a risk and it didnt pay off.
His death was actually not pointless as it was all part of a gamble for him, what was pointless was that after concentrating the film on him, his death was then treated as less important somehow than Harrelsons on the guy from Dodgeball.
