That interview ended up being wrong. I forgot if it wasn't from the creators or just some guy that worked on the show but on a podcast the creators said they were using "Michael Crichton" logic and everything that happens on the show will have some kind of truth or logic to it. It looks like that is out the window as well.

Charlie the Hobbit and Daniel Faraday will be on this weeks episode. Rumors are is this will be the episode that ties both time lines together.

If the earth two stuff ends this week, without a Hurley ep, that seems pretty significant.

The Hurley episode is next week. I'm thinking it will be the last "fun" episode before shit hits the fan. They did the same thing last season kind of.

If the earth 2 Hurley ep is next week that seems to indicate that this week isn't the one that ties the two earths together.

Didn't Ben kill everyone in the Dharma initiative at the behest of Richard and, therefore, presumably Jacob?

If so, that seriously calls into question Jacob's "good guy" cred, doesn't it?

My impression is that Jacob doesn't really get involved in the day to day decision making. He makes certain wishes known (candidates, etc) but doesn't really tell them how to go about it. So Ben as leader was able to make his own choices and as long as he didn't kill a candidate Jacob would allow it because that's all part of the test.

Are we sure Ben was always following Jacob's orders? Because he seemed to think Jacob was in the hut, and Christian was in the hut. Christian was clearly the other guy, who took over that body when the plane crashed.

I think Ben became leader, they collected lists and gave them to Richaes who went to Jacob. But other than an order to preserve candidates I think the Others had a lot of autonomy and Ben just pretended to have a more direct connection to Jacob so he could get away with all he did.

just saw the episode and thought it was awesome. best of the season so far. desmond episodes seem to always be the best, with locke's second.

it really puts a whole new spin on desmond's "see you in another life, brother" tagline

Yeah, a great ep. I especially liked the touch of Fisher Stevens (Minkowski) being the limo driver. The guy who, unlike Desmond, "couldn't go back" after the time jumps, is now the guy literally shepherding Desmond around on Earth 2.

I'd be really be disappointed if they end this show by saying this is just a dream.

So much has happened in the show that I don't see how they can claim this can all be in reality. Smokey and Jacob alone are impossible to explain as real events in our world.

Yeah, she's aged pretty well, considering that she was on LA Law 20 years ago and is closing in fifty.

I think between Earth 2 Hawking's comments and Earth 2 Faraday's diagram, it's becoming increasingly likely (as has been theorized) that Earth 2 isn't a dream but some sort of alternate timeline... Des, being the one guy who can travel time and live, has to be the one to fix things (ala Sam Beckett).

By the way, anyone else catch the shout-out to Dr Manhattan's origin during the electromagnetic testing sequences?

Well, this show has never been about the real world. The show is obviously a sci-fi or fantasy program. The only question is how much is sci-fi (time travel, electro-magnetic pulses, etc) and how much is fantasy (smoke monsters, jacob).

I'm more worried about the show ending with Jeff Probst showing up out of nowhere and declaring Jack the leader of the island.

Does anyone else not give a shit about that storyline?

I found the quote by the way: http://lost-media.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=325

 Quote:
Lindelof said that a DVD set of the first season will come out this summer, before a second season begins in the fall. As the show progresses, he added, it won't venture too far into science fiction as its mysteries unfold. "We're still trying to be ... firmly ensconced in the world of science fact," he said in an interview. "I don't think we've shown anything on the show yet ... that has no rational explanation in the real world that we all function within. We certainly hint at psychic phenomena, happenstance and ... things being in a place where they probably shouldn't be. But nothing is flat-out impossible. There are no spaceships. There isn't any time travel."

He did say "trying".

It's so foregone a conclusion at this point that, no, I don't really care. I'm more interested in answers to the various mysteries that have gone along for the first five years and not so much the endgame to their storyline (Jacob v Smokey) that they tacked on virtually out of nowhere in the last year

- walt's super natural abilities
- why the psychic freaked out about claire's baby
- why do kids get othernapped
- who the "good guys" are (ben? charles? smokey? jacob? oceanic folks?)

i think the quote was stated "as of now", meaning as of the first season. it's only a few episodes into the second that we finally see a monster made of smoke, and already hinted at there being a boat in the middle of an island.

Exactly. In the first season, they didn't plan on making time travel a component of the show. Later, they changed their mind. That's making a story up as they go along.

If they'd had a plot sketched out for the entire series as of the first season (as opposed to making the show up as they went along) they'd have already known/decided that time travel was a factor and would be introduced later in the series and, presumably, wouldn't have said "there isn't any time travel."

unless they were saying, as literally quoted, "I don't think we've shown anything on the show yet". again, the smoke monster was already teased in the first season, revealed shortly after the quote in the second season. maybe things are different upstate, but for me, that would qualify as having "no rational explanation in the real world that we all function within."

I don't know if g-man is just being g-man but in the first podcast the producers joked "should we tell them about time travel?" They always knew it was going to be in the show.

im under the impression that a good 75% of the show has been preconceived; at least the general, broad strokes. time travel, smoke monster, others, devil guy, etc. little details have certainly come about (niki and paulo) and there's things we know that have been altered a good deal, like ben lasting more than a few episodes and being the actual leader, jack's death in the first episode, and i think charlie's death was supposed to happen earlier.

I'm willing to accept that a lot of that was preconceived but I really doubt devil guy was part of the broad plan.

I think they were always going with good vs evil. Once they had an end date for the show they knew how far they could take it.

I think they probably knew the beginning and the end on the first season, and settled on other things like time travel, Jacob and the monster in the second, which is where they started planting the seeds of what's happened in these last two seasons.

I believe you may be essentially correct but I think the time-line is different.

I would venture a guess that they didn't really start planning out the ending until 2007, when they got the network to commit to a specific end date.

I think that before that happened, they felt forced to make things up and stretch things as they went along because they had no idea if and when the network would end the show.

Around the first or second season, JJ Abrams told the ending to Stephen King. King reportedly loved it (and once threatened to divulge it if they stretched the show beyond five seasons, like Abrams had told him). Why Stephen King of all people?

Stephen King's Dark Tower novels involve parallel dimensions. People who are about to die can see into the other dimension (like Juliet, Charlie and Desmond). At some point they have to get someone who is dead from the other dimension, but his presence in the "main" one starts fucking up reality.

The similarities may be a coincidence, but I don't think so.

I agree with that, given what we've seen so far. The producers have never been shy about letting their fanboy flags fly.

And, yeah, I agree that the producers probably knew back around Season 2 that parallel universes were going to play a big part of the ending. My comment about 2007 was directed more at the idea that, until they had an end date, they had to throw in various other (unplanned) stuff in order to stretch things out and account for unexpected stuff (like the problems with some of the actors [Eko, Ana Lucia, Libby, Rousseau and even Desmond], the unexpected popularity of Ben and a writers' strike).

The producers have said that they love Stephen King and the Dark Tower books are a huge influence. I've heard that if you read them you should know how Lost ends if you've been paying attention.

King is also a fan of Lost and sold the TV and movie rights to the producers for 20 bucks but they recently said they didn't want to handle something that huge for now so they passed on the rights.
