so, ok, as far as answering stuff...
dl and cc claim to have already said all they're going to say about the numbers. but... what exactly is that?
one premise is some guy worked on the hatch. put in serial code type numbers. once the incident happened, they built an apple IIe computer to release the pressure every so often. for whatever reason, they decided "let's make it tricky" and made the code something harder than "press enter", probably just grabbing the first set of numbers they saw: the serial numbers. eventually, the guy left the island, got that "leaving island crazy" thing, and went to a mental institution. there, he met hurley, and because he couldn't stop repeating the numbers, hurley took them, used them, and won the lottery. hurley goes to australia finds someone else('s spouse) who had the numbers, then tries to head back home to LA, crashes on the island, where he sees the original numbers.
...and then, there's also this maaaagical wheel of fortune in a myyyyystical lighthouse somehow no one saw, that also has those same numbers, which captain smoke attack somehow saw, and brought home to his cave to keep track.
each story is fine enough on its own, relatively speaking in a lost-type universe, but how the fuck do they relate to one another?
They've gone into more of the number stuff with the online mini-episodes and such and I think they've explained enough. I think the numbers are part of a bigger thing than just what they're showing on the show. Damon and Carlton have said that once the show is over they are done with it but ABC/Disney can do whatever they want. I think some of the things that aren't answered in the show will be answered in some other kind of way through TV movies, books and video games. Think of how Star Wars has kept going after the movies. That is how I see things going with Lost.
