Man in black and Jacob are brothers. Allison Janney is their mother.
Jack and Kate die. "What they died for" is about them.
Libby has a bigger role than expected.

Lindelof: Lost Finale Won’t Answer All Your Questions

I don't need all the questions answered but they damn well better not skimp on the important ones or, worse, give us some sort of damn psuedo-cliffhanger where we have no idea what happened to the characters after the credits roll.

Almost every interview I've read about the finale with them they mention The Shields finale. That gives me hope.

What still needs to be answered? What does everyone still care about?

They don't need to close every single plot point.

With this show they could easily get away with leaving a few island mysteries.

I would hope the most important thing is to bring an end to these characters story.

Yeah, pretty much.

For starters, what is the island? And they better not leave it with the answer being nothing more than "a cork."

I'm told the series will end when Ben figures out he can use that big underground wheel to drive the island like a boat.

I agree. I want closure on the characters not the island. I also don't give a shit about Jacob and the man in black. I don't even think getting off the island is a big deal anymore since they already did it once.

I want to know who Jacob and MIB are simply because they made the last season of the show about them and have led us to believe nearly everything that's happened is because of the two of them.

But, yeah, other than Desmond (because Penny's his constant, etc.) I don't really care if most of them get off the island or not as long as the ending is good. This isn't Gilligan and the castaways here.

Penny is Desmond's constant.
Desmond is (supposedly) Daniel's constant (though I'm not sure if it's a fact or just a plan that Desmond Daniel had).
I don't think Penny has a constant.

so, ok, as far as answering stuff...

dl and cc claim to have already said all they're going to say about the numbers. but... what exactly is that?

one premise is some guy worked on the hatch. put in serial code type numbers. once the incident happened, they built an apple IIe computer to release the pressure every so often. for whatever reason, they decided "let's make it tricky" and made the code something harder than "press enter", probably just grabbing the first set of numbers they saw: the serial numbers. eventually, the guy left the island, got that "leaving island crazy" thing, and went to a mental institution. there, he met hurley, and because he couldn't stop repeating the numbers, hurley took them, used them, and won the lottery. hurley goes to australia finds someone else('s spouse) who had the numbers, then tries to head back home to LA, crashes on the island, where he sees the original numbers.

...and then, there's also this maaaagical wheel of fortune in a myyyyystical lighthouse somehow no one saw, that also has those same numbers, which captain smoke attack somehow saw, and brought home to his cave to keep track.

each story is fine enough on its own, relatively speaking in a lost-type universe, but how the fuck do they relate to one another?

At the end of "The Last Recruit" Jack has a scratch on his neck like the one he had on the plane in the season opener. They're either messing with us or the LA part of the storyline does happen after whats going on on the island.

They've gone into more of the number stuff with the online mini-episodes and such and I think they've explained enough. I think the numbers are part of a bigger thing than just what they're showing on the show. Damon and Carlton have said that once the show is over they are done with it but ABC/Disney can do whatever they want. I think some of the things that aren't answered in the show will be answered in some other kind of way through TV movies, books and video games. Think of how Star Wars has kept going after the movies. That is how I see things going with Lost.

An A-to-Z guide to how Lost lost its way. Kind of bitchy and fanboyish but I think a few of the criticisms, primarily those involving Ben, the Others, Sayid and Widmore are on the money.

ABC expands 'Lost' finale by extra half-hour: When the "Lost" finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd, the episode will run from 9 to 11:30 p.m. The overrun will air instead of the local news, with the "Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost" post-finale special remaining at 11:30 p.m. ABC is expected to announce the plan on tonight's episode of Kimmel.

Tonight's episode had a fair number of deaths as we head towards the finale. Sayeed's was expected but the others surprised me. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but it was a bit of an ethnic cleansing episode. It was good seeing Jack cry, he seemed likeable for a change. So if somebody is still going to take Jacob's place, who is it going to be? Hurley, Jack and Sawyer seem to be the last ones left that don't have their names scratched out. What did Kate do to get her name scratched out?

At this point, death on Lost is starting to feel like death in a post-1990 mainstream comic book crossover. There's no tension because I just assume they'll be back, either from magic or the alternate earth.

So the crazy lady that killed Jacob's mom plus a small village was one of the good guys? Smokey's original crime seems to be that he was just smarter and was curious.

It's sort of a Garden of Eden thing. Being curious about the apple is what got Adam in all that trouble too.

I wonder too if the fake mom was actually more like smokey than Jacob? Was she a smoke monster and maybe smokey ends up being Jacob's replacement?

it was a good episode, i really enjoyed it. connected a few dots and such. though, honestly, it seems like this could have been the season premiere, rather than the "there's only one regular episode after this" episode. seems a bit jarring to not have had any of the reg'lar cast in an episode so meaningful. that aside, however, i did like it.

Speaking of which, I doubt they'll ever come right out and say it, but I think there's a good chance the mom is/was Lilith, albeit from the modern feminist perspective that Lilith was a "good witch."

After being cast out of Eden she was forced to live in a cave. In some legends Lilith is a witch who steals children and causes death to infants. In Kabbalah, Lilith hid the divine light of Sephirot.

Crappy episode. Last season they basically said that Adam and Eve were Rose and Bernard. They have dragged the show out a too long now. They're just retconning shit now.

Shitty preview had the fucking doors music playing. They stopped caring.

Yeah, I agree there's been a lot of retconning this season. But the white and black rocks with the skeletons never seemed to tie into Rose and Bernard. So that itself always seemed like a retcon too.

Either way, yeah, I'm still of the opinion they're making most of it up as they go along.

I had a bad feeling the show was going to shit when they had the first scene with Jacob and no name. This episode proved it.

Yeah, pretty much me too. I'm still enjoying parts of the show but the closer we get to the end the less confident I am that the ending will hold together at all.

As I've said before, suddenly turning the entire series in the last season into a show about a struggle between two magical beings, when the first five seasons built up an entirely different premise, was not a really good idea.
