That's really a "damned if they do..." scenario you're putting forth.
Furthermore, this wasn't something where the news broke and then republicans ran for cover. The story was broken nationally by conservative writer Bill Kristol and he started the whole "Steele should resign" movement.
Also, just out of curiosity, when has the Democrat Party ever called out their leader (or other bigwig) and
not attempted to spin it?
