They were right. It's not as if they had a choice.
You're painting this as if it were some noble act on their part...but just like the Republican corporate cocksucker who apologized to BP, there was no way that even the most deluded partisan hack could spin Steele's comments.
Furthermore, this wasn't something where the news broke and then republicans ran for cover. The story was broken nationally by conservative writer Bill Kristol and he started the whole "Steele should resign" movement.
It doesn't matter at all. Steele's fuck up was so profound, the rest of the world would have found out eventually, closed event or not.
Also, just out of curiosity, when has the Democrat Party ever called out their leader (or other bigwig) and not attempted to spin it?
