The Yankees' more pressing need was for bullpen help and bench depth, so they addressed it by trading for...a "switch" hitting bat whose primary position - 1B - is barred by Teixeira and whose only other position - DH - means that Posada's knees have to hold up to keep him in the lineup. I think the Kearns trade helps with the bench, and Kerry Wood, (BIG) if healthy, will be a boon to the bullpen, but the Berkman deal seems silly for a team with no problems scoring runs. I know that the market for relief pitching was ridiculous in terms of asking price, but this move still makes little sense.
I agree. The Jays have quite a few experienced AL pitchers in their bullpen that they would have gladly traded for prospects since they are in rebuilding mode again.

The Yankees have always traded for their needs by the deadline and the Jays were looking to sell.

I really was expecting a deal to have been struck between the two teams by the deadline.

In EVERY other team's defense, the Blue Jays' asking price was ridiculous. At least two top prospects for a two-month rental? Yeah, good luck with that, you 4th place team, you. The Blue Jays are the McGurk of the AL.
