I just thought that Mxy wrote an interesting article that encapsulates many of the earlier discussions about the finale. Yes, it tends to support my (and others') point that they were making shit up as they went along but, again, that's not really implying a scoop.

so my parents just (about an hour ago) finished watching the entire LOST collection. my father was in a horrible accident in november, and my folks found themselves with a lot of spare time because of it once he was home. so after years of suggesting it to them (and buying them an netflix-ready-blu-ray player) i finally got them to dig into lost.
my guess is they started the first episode of the first season sometime late in january. they finished the last episode of the last season this evening. and while the general response is the same, i was amazed at how different their reactions were, cramming what all of us took 6+ years to do into a 2 month window.
not only did we have an entire week to reflect upon and discuss each episode, we also had a half-a-year long break between seasons. we had all the recap episodes with the CC and DL. we had discussions of every episode with colleagues at work. and, most importantly, the intraweb! whole chats here, wikis, theory sites, etc. we had so much to our advantage that i just assumed that's how we were sposda watch it.
but, im guessing the vast majority of "that" world out there is non-uber-nerd, or nonber nerds. even gauging by the ratings for the show, which were never all that amazing, seem to suggest many people watching each week were casual fans. ...which, in listening to my parents' thoughts and questions on the show as it was going on, makes everything sound way more confusing than we thought it was.
even simple stuff like john locke being the smoke monster. i remember us discussing that in like the second or third episode of the final season. ...but, apparently, that's never confirmed until one of the last episodes, and we were just basing it all on theories and such.
in general, it makes me wonder how different most shows (or movies) from my youth would have been were there such an intraweb at the time. like, how quickly would "sixth sense" be spoiled in the era of twitter? would earlier sci-fi shows like the x-files, V (first), quantum leap, etc. excelled with the added dimension? are shows of today, like lost, geared for intranet use, casting aside such innocent victims as my parents?

I watched the first four seasons of the shield in about a month, the last three as they aired. The last three were completely different since I had to wait week to week and season to season. It some ways its better, the suspense and theorizing made it more fun but I also forgot a lot of smaller things since I didn't see episodes back to back. I'm thinking of starting the x-files. I saw one or two episodes when it aired and I know very little about the overall plot. I might watch one a day or less just to see if it makes it better.

I watched Season One of LOST in about a week, on DVD. The rest of the entire series was excruciatingly slow comparatively...

Seasons 1-5, if I remember correctly, are rock-solid when watched sequentially. After that, it's hit-or-miss as the show reached epic fame, which thus skewed the creative process...

You forget one very important thing, though. People don't need the internet to talk to each other. The internet heightened the conspiracies and such of Lost due to the immediacy of the technology; but people have been discussing, brainstorming their favorite shows for years. Instead of just having message boards dedicated to their favorite shows, they had fanzines and newsletters. The simple answer being that nerds will always seek each other out to discuss nerderies.

true. but, back in the heydey of nonternet, your discussion groups were limited. sometimes severely. maybe it was just a group of friends, and maybe there was a magazine one of you subscribed to that had tidbits once a month. etc.
but now that the web is all social, your group of people has vastly expanded to the tenth degree of variety, including a st patrick's day ronald reagan named g-man, and various time traveling doctors, occasionally named ...doctor, whom you'd never have had conversations with previously.
beyond that, there's so, so much more info you can go and review. blogs and forums you don't belong to and would never visit are just a google search away. what were the talking birds hurley saw...? wikipedia knows! how did the dialog exchange go, specifically, between jacob and guyliner? here's the youtube clip someone from florida posted.
just seems like a major stream that, with all the guerrilla (and gorilla) marketing shows like lost and other JJ abramms projects now take, shows are starting to interject and pillage.

lost ended one year ago today. as did, really, any urgent desire i ever have to watch tv. even with the series finale of smallville, a show i admittedly stuck with - i had less desire to see the 10-year-long superman build up than i did the regular, weekly episode of lost. nothing compares! it's gone, and you took it from me!!
i'm currently watching the entire thing through again on the ridiculously over-the-top blu-ray collection that a client sent me. i'm a few episodes into season 5; just before the 1970s dharmaville saga. i know i've seen most of seasons 1-3 a few times, but this is only the second look i'll have season 5 and season 6.
its very 6th sense-like watching it through again and knowing how things turn out. it actually seems like a better show, at least so far, because i'm not just trying to get to the answers. i remember feeling like they wasted time or things were dragging on in across episodes, or even seasons, and i don't really have that feeling now. the stories also seem to make (a bit) more sense. like, the temple, i thought was just something they threw in there during the last season, but there are references to it as early as season 3.
also, miles is much more awesome of a character than i remember giving him credit for.

http://www.nerdist.com/2011/05/nerdist-podcast-85-damon-lindelof/Lindelof was on the nerdist podcast (something everyone here should be listening to) and he talked about the behind the scenes aspect of Lost and the troubles of having a weekly serialized show. Its worth a listen to and it made me want to go back and rewatch it. He also claims no one has told him the finale sucked in real life, only online which makes me think he's full of shit.

I think LOST excelled in the casting of certain characters (Sawyer, Locke, Sayid, Ben, Hurley, Roussea, etc.), and building suspense and mystery around the concept. Not to mention, as it was one of the most expensive shows to ever produce, every inch shows on the screen. The location filming is second-to-none. I've never seen a show with a better location. I can re-watch LOST over and over JUST for the beauty of Hawaii and such. So, those factors, along with it being one of the first to embrace viral online marketing, makes LOST unique. No wonder you can't find anything to replace it, Rob. Nothing's been made that matches what it did well. And what LOST did well, it did fucking PERFECT. And thus, your pain...

The location filming is second-to-none. made all the more awesome...r, because every single scene was shot in hawaii. even the ones sposda be in england or russia or LA or ...the... lair of the underground hell cork.

He also claims no one has told him the finale sucked in real life, only online which makes me think he's full of shit.
i still don't think it did. what it did not do is run through a laundry list of Q&A, which is essentially what the bonus 10 minute episode "new man in charge" did do. 50 answers crammed into one ben monologue. it was cool, and nerdly enjoyable, but none of those answers offered anything more than "meh" in response. the finale, while it didn't flat out say "here's what the talking birds meant", just summed up the ride the characters had been on. it was a summary of their six years, which just happened to take place on an island with thousands of years of crazy. we didn't find out who built that giant 4-toed statue any more than we found out why john locke's dad was such a dick. namely: because we didn't have to. their pieces to the overall puzzle didn't need explanation, because it wasn't relevant to the focal point. yeah, OK, it was a bit of a cock tease to think we would find out exactly how the pirate ship wheel could teleport an island through time (and space), but i don't think the show was any less awesome for not detailing those facets.

Agreed. The finale was more about saying goodbye to the characters than goodbye to the overall story. Not to mention, I still don't see why ABC doesn't just cash-in on a Hurley/Ben Years series. Or even the next batch of characters to come crash on the island, and their adventures. LOST's status in media and lore isn't based on its story. It's based on the concept. So, the story can continue indefinitely, really. As long as you have imaginative writers willing to take it somewhere, I'd totally love to see another LOST with entirely new cast.....save maybe guest-appearance by Hurley and Ben...
