I watched the first four seasons of the shield in about a month, the last three as they aired. The last three were completely different since I had to wait week to week and season to season. It some ways its better, the suspense and theorizing made it more fun but I also forgot a lot of smaller things since I didn't see episodes back to back.

I'm thinking of starting the x-files. I saw one or two episodes when it aired and I know very little about the overall plot. I might watch one a day or less just to see if it makes it better.
