You forget one very important thing, though. People don't need the internet to talk to each other. The internet heightened the conspiracies and such of Lost due to the immediacy of the technology; but people have been discussing, brainstorming their favorite shows for years. Instead of just having message boards dedicated to their favorite shows, they had fanzines and newsletters. The simple answer being that nerds will always seek each other out to discuss nerderies.
