The cast looks pretty decent so far. The only thing that Pro's this for me that is that I've never been a big fan of Snyder and he's not really a guy who knows how to turn off his directing style.

Again? Zod has been done and has been done well in the Supe movies. They should move on to new characters we haven't seen on the big screen. I would love it if they give us a Darksied or Mongul Superman movie.

was zod a prominent character in the comics prior to the donner films?

Again, no. As I recall, prior to Loeb taking over the titles he hadn't been seen since a two or three issue arc back in Byrne's run, at the end of which he was killed off.

i like zod. and i'm not at all opposed to doing a new origin story. but that doesn't mean i want the same movie with new effects.

zod was a nobody before, and a nobody after (pending link verification, of course) the films. and, i think that relative insignificance points to how a superman film could be successful and fun when he's facing anyone. the whole mystique with zod is what happened with him in the donner films, and thus any revisiting to the concept is really just revisiting those films. there's no "catering to the character" or the history or anything like that. it's not like they're making a new lex luthor - they're almost literally just remaking a character only known from one other source; the first movies.

granted, one pitfall with superman is that his rogues gallery is pretty lame. outside of lex luthor, it's difficult for the non-hardcore fan to name any, let alone someone who doesn't know comics. it's not like having the joker, the riddler, catwoman, the penguin, etc. hell, i'm a decent supes fan and i can barely name that many. and then the ones i do think of (toyman, mxy, etc.) are lame [for a one-shot movie format].

but if zod was, for all intents and purposes, created in the film (really, everything most people know is just what donner built) then the formula should hold true that a new opponent could be designed. it doesn't have to be darkseid or doomsday, it could be a movie-specific creation.

sure, there's always a chance of a genetically created sun-god thing... but i think the (atrocious) writing / production was the problem with that, not the character.

I guess I'm fine with Zod. But, to quantify, about as fine as I am with this entire production. It all feels very...........meh. I dunno. I kind of agree with Rob's analysis, as well. While Zod has been around since the 50's/60's, he wasn't that prominent until Terence Stamp ordered Chris to kneel before him. And like G said, they reappeared in their militaristic cold-war-Russian-esque outfits by the early-to-mid 80's when Byrne wrote the most logical approach to them with Ka-El becoming their executioner. After that, the Phantom Zone trio didn't appear until Jeph Loeb did his gayest to fuck it all up by having some dude who had powers under red sunlight call himself "Zod". Keep in mind, this is the same era and writer who insisted on having people talk, breathe, and in the Flash's case, run in the empty, cold depths of space. No, that was not sentence error. You read all of that correctly. So, I say again, fuck Jeph Loeb.

But, I digress. General Zod is only known because he appeared in Superman II. They are using this character again to (a) hook the fanboys, (b) hook anyone who remembers Superman II, and (c) give him someone who he can fist-fight with on an even level.

I Pro-dict: it gets a 7-out-of-10. Great effects. Too many Snyder slow-mo-punch shots, though. And Amy Adams is horribly cast as Lois. The sequel could be better. We'll see.

Pro, is there a way to use your powers and pull out a DVD-ripped copy of this movie from the future piratebay?

I've tried. It always comes out as an episode of FULL HOUSE, though. I don't know why...
