It's clever because it shits all over one of their most acclaimed works and a writer who doesn't want to work with them any more.

So...let me get this straight...Swamp Thing is the bad guy and Alec Holland is the good guy? My prediction: Alec Holland becomes the new Deadman and Deadman becomes the new Swamp Thing and Alan Moore gets screwed over!

No. In yet another attempt to revert the DCU to the silver age and/or satellite era (depending on the character), Alec Holland (who never was the Swamp Thing as of Moore's "Anatomy Lesson" nearly 30 years ago) will be forced to merge with the plant elemental that is currently Swamp Thing, to restore "balance" to the natural order of life and death (or some such concept). Also look for some sort of forced attempt to tie "the green" (the Moore concept of plant energy) to rhe green light of Oa.

I don't see the big issue. A lot of people probably thought Moore was "shitting all over" someone else when he got started on Swamp Thing.

I felt that SoM was shitting all over Mxy when he first appeared in Rob Kamphausen's MAN OF GAY #42. Mainly because it was the "fecal" issue. But, even after that, I thought "Oh no, a spinoff". But, SoM has since proven his own individuality and unique position among us all. So, stop shitting on SoM, okay?

I don't see the big issue. A lot of people probably thought Moore was "shitting all over" someone else when he got started on Swamp Thing. Assuming I'm right about the plan I think it's less of a "DC wants to try something cool and different" (or as different as retrofitting all their characters back to 1975 can be) and more of a "oh, yeah, Moore? well fuck you" from Johns. Back in the 2009, Moore was extremely critical of "Blackest Night" for, in his mind, ripping him off: - I was noticing that DC seems to have based one of its latest crossovers in Green Lantern on a couple of eight-page stories that I did 25 or 30 years ago. I would have thought that would seem kind of desperate and humiliating, When I have said in interviews that it doesn’t look like the American comic book industry has had an idea of its own in the past 20 or 30 years, I was just being mean. I didn’t expect the companies concerned to more or less say, “Yeah, he’s right. Let’s see if we can find another one of his stories from 30 years ago to turn into some spectacular saga.”
Now, to be fair (and in line a bit with Mxy's point) there's something a little hypocritical about a guy who's entire mainstream comics career (and a lot of his "independent" work too) was based on taking other people's characters and riffing on them (largely by adding sex and little bit of the old ultraviolence) now grousing about other writers doing the same thing with his work for hire stories. A fact that probably wasn't lost on Johns, et al. So, I can easily envision that Johns thought something like, "okay, Alan, you don't want us using 'your' concepts for DC-owned characters? Got it. So we'll just take probably your most original version of one of them and just retcon it away to before you wrote it. Happy now?" I have a feeling Moore won't care (he's probably too busy now getting ready to claim that Charlie Sheen ripped off his "I'm a warlock" from him too). However, it would be a heck of a coincidence that, two years after Moore groused about a Green Lantern crossover borrowing from his work, the same people he criticized before are taking one of the characters most closely associated with him...and using it for a Green Lantern crossover.

P.S. Geoff Johns has now earned his rightful place next to Jeph Loeb as "Worst Comic Creator of the 21st Century"...

Brightest Day is still lame, though. is it? i just read through the blackest night series (just the main books, not the tie-ins) and really liked it. not sure if it helped at all that i am not a green lantern fan at all, but i thought it was a fun read. i was looking forward to reading through brightest day.

Brightest Day's main problem?A lack of a coherent plotline. It would be better if instead of jumping back and forth in an issue,is if it was done old-school Marvel Comics Presents style.Take the Deadman story and have it framing the book with individual stories inside of the rest of the characters.Telling each story in a more sequential form might make it better.Also....I don't care about Swamp Thing enough for it to really make any difference to me.

I've, uh, "picked up" some of the other issues and I always end up skimming through them. If you like Blackest Night it's probably worth giving it a shot, though.

Nah, you're assuming Johns is a spiteful little bitch, but I don't get that vibe from the guy at all. Let us remember that because a guy can't write doesn't mean he's the embodiment of all evil in the universe (Loeb's mass genocide in Africa notwithstanding). They've been talking about "taking back" some Vertigo properties for a few years now, and I'm guessing this is simply a high profile way of doing that. I see no problem with that: no one was doing anything with Swamp Thing in Vertigo, anyway.

I would note, however, that "taking back" Swampy from Vertigo in no way required undoing Moore's take on the character. Moore's run was set squarely in the DCU and the mainstream continuity.
