Who ya gonna call? Maybe not Bill Murray.

Dan Aykroyd, the man behind the “Ghostbusters” movies, says the hotly-anticipated "Ghostbusters 3" will finally start filming this spring. With or without Bill Murray.

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray," Aykroyd told Dennis Miller on his radio show. "That is our hope. We have an excellent script.” But while he admits, “Billy was absolutely the lead and contributed to it in a massive way,” Aykroyd points out, “The concept is much larger than any individual role.”

Basically, they can do without you, Mr. Murray!

In the next movie, Aykroyd says, “We get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood."

And speaking of new blood, Ashton Kutcher’s name has been thrown around in relation to a younger squad.

It's okay, Ashton Kutcher will be able to carry the movie even without Murray!

aykroyd really needs the money I guess. about this alleged script... pro, can your powers of silver-screen clairvoyance shed some light on whether the screenplay has any potential to not suck?

I have focused on it, Phil. I have. It's a little cloudy. I guess because it's so up in the air as to whether it gets made in this timeline, or not. It's all causality and the ripples from that, you see. Like walking into a steam room with your glasses on. However, one thing is crystal-clear. One thing is obvious and apparent and screams truth in volumes that offend the angelic chorus of the neverafter.

Without Bill Murray, this film is doomed.

if other actors are going to be the ghostbusters, why can't they be a different movie? i imagine most people only like the ghostbusters films because of the characters; if you're changing the characters, there's no point. this isn't an extended franchise like james bond, it's a two-picture collection, and many wont even acknowledge the second film. just make a new film with ashton kutcher called laser pack ghost hunters , throw in some timely dated references like sean combs, kill off / rip off the ray parker themes, and boom, a whole new franchise. that i will not see. because it's not the original ghostbusters.

Because it's all about the brand name. It's same reason they constantly reboot/recast Bond instead of just creating a new British secret agent series every ten years or so.

The problem is actually Ackroyd himself at this point. The guy is now the exact kind of tired hack that people like he, Belushi and Murray were satirizing back on SNL in the old days. With him involved this is probably going to end up about as "good" as "Blues Brothers 2000."

Murray obviously realizes this and doesn't want to ruin his current good rep to be part of this whole "desperate has-been SNL cast members" thing.

As for new actors...why not? I remember when a lot of people said they could never reboot Star Trek... that no one would replace Keaton as Batman (and that Keaton could never replace West)... that the public would never accept a blonde James Bond, etc.

Seems to me that the talent is the key, not the concept. For example, if they got guys like (off the top of my head) Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd and Craig Robinson to play Venkman, Ray, Egon and Winston, in a "Ghostbusters" reboot/sequel, written and directed by someone with actual talent, it might be worth watching.

But the idea of Ackroyd mugging for the camera and pretending he's still relevant would be just plain sad and probably worse than seeing Ashton play "Oscar Venkman" at this point.

I want Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, and Hudson. Moranis, Potts, and Weaver don't have to be there. And I don't really care who they cast in there otherwise, as long as they're funny. I'd prefer the quite, Murray-esque humor of Seth Green, rather than the bumbling washed-up teen-heartthrob Kutcher.

Rob's right on this one. Without the original guys...all of them...might as well make it something completely different...

Or at least make this one a send-off for the originals and let the rest stand with a completely new crew of Ghostbuster employees. You could even have more than just the four main spots. But, I don't want a recast of anyone. Brand new characters, with brand new talent. My pick for a new Ghostbuster team would be:

Bill Hader
Seth Green
Jason Segal
Ken Jeong
Kristen Wiig
Donald Glover

With Charlyne Yi taking Annie Potts place as the receptionist...

i understand that; it is in hollywood's nature to piggy back onto something for a cheap-heat-like head start toward revenue. but... is there really that much value in the "ghostbusters" brand name? the four original cast members aside, what is still marketable? the hersemobile? the song? the firehouse? slimer? what percentage of the box office do you honestly think would be there just to see the ghostbusters logo?

james bond was built into a franchise early on. the spy concept, the 007 tag, the theme songs, the gadgets, cars, women, etc. i'm sure there were some growing pains (and still are) whenever the franchise changes hands (and not an internet to share them on!) but it clearly was a franchise that could be repurposed. there's redeemable value to a number of hollywood concepts: predator, terminator, aliens, batamn, friday the 13th, etc. that would allow themselves to move past the original cast without much slack.

that same effort, at least from what i can see, was not applied to ghostbusters; again, the original cast aside. to me, the success of the original is very uniquely attached to the actors. and, again, even that wasn't really enough to help save the sequel.

i guess the real question is: at what point does the "head start" of using the ghostbusters brand overpower the cost associated with licensing the name, logo, themes, concepts, etc.? versus starting "ghost busterinos" with ashton and a talking robot from the future.

Chayleen Yi is a fucking great choice and I hate you for thinking of something so brilliant.

I'm thinking Jack McBrayer would be a great choice for the new Rick Moranis

I like! Although, in my lineup, Ken Jeong pretty much fills that role. But, again, I'm not casting exact pre-existing niches or slots. But, I'm not against it either...
