Nice story.
When I first started working, I did some conveyancing work for a union's women's refuge.
The person I was dealing with at the conclusion of the transaction asked me if I did any pro bono work. I was 8 months out of law school, and knew jack shit, and said as much. Didn't matter, they wanted me to sit on some committee or another, vague about the details.
Anyhoo, turns out it was the prostitutes union, and they wanted a lawyer to help them on a comittee on the legalisation of prostitution.
I went to about 5 meetings, and was often pretty freaked out by some of the venues and participants. There was me, a town planner (you'd be surprised how much of it is contigent upon zoning), an accountant, and about 5 madams and 2 cross-dressers.
It was cool/weird, and then my mum died, so I pulled out of the committee meetings.
No one rolled up wearing anything weird: they were all taking it seriously, but they took great delight in showing me (a green young lawyer) some of the transvestite dress exchange shops they had going.
