Nov. 29 (UPI) — In a landmark bipartisan vote, the U.S. Senate passed legislation on Tuesday that protects the right to same-sex and interracial marriage.
The Respect for Marriage Act, which had already passed in the U.S. House, passed in the Senate on Tuesday night by a vote of 61-36. The bill received unanimous support from Democrats, plus 12 Republicans who also backed the bill in a procedural vote earlier this month.
...The final bill, which did include a provision to ensure polygamous marriage remains illegal in the United States, repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, which denied federal benefits to same-sex couples.
The measure now goes back to the U.S. House for another vote. If approved, the Respect for Marriage Act would then head to Biden’s desk where the president is expected to sign the measure into law before Democrats lose control of the House in January.
While many Republicans did not support the bill, 12 GOP lawmakers helped form the coalition of bipartisan support that pushed it through.
“For the sake of our nation today and its survival, we do well by taking this step,” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., as she called for more tolerance during what she described as “turbulent times for our nation.”
Predictable. The same 12 RINOs who virtue-signalled they would support the legislation two weeks ago.
It is also expected to pass the House. Texas House Republican Chip Roy, in House debate, pointed out that none of the Republican senators who voiced support of the gay marriage legislation lives in states that voted no less less than 53% to 70% for Trump in 2020. That all 12 GOP Senators are opposing the will of the people who voted for them, that they would not suffer politically if they opposed the gay marriage codification. That people voted to give Republicans a House majority, to change course, to represent them. And literally THE DAY elections were called to officially give Republicans a House majority, the first thing Republicans did was vote with Democrats to pass this piece of legislation their voters clearly strongly oppose. Showing that nothing has changed.
And the GOP are voting to keep in power Ronna McDaniel as GOP chair, Mitch McConnell as Senate minority leader, and Kevin McCarthy as House speaker. The three people who sabotaged and lost the 2018 and 2020 elections, and undermined and minimized the 2022 gains that should have been much greater. That their Republican voters want change, and their endorsement of this legislation THE DAY REPUBLICANS GAINED CONTROL OF THE HOUSE shows they have no intention of changing at all, and are actually defying the will of the people who voted for them. With the same three RINOs kept leading the party. No change, no course correction.
