I didn't know till this year that Al Smith, who the dinner is tribute to, was the first Catholic elected to political office in the United States, in 1928. So while largely an annual event filled with humor, the dinner is inherently a Catholic political event.
And Kamala Harris snubbed them, the first invited candidate not to attend in 40 years (the last, Walter Mondale, humiliatingly lost to Reagan in 1984, in 49 of the 50 states.) Which I hope is an omen of Kamala Harris' fate as well. Harris snubbed them. And further insulled Catholics with her pre-recorded video she did with Molly Shannon.
