Being beat up for being gay happens, being beaten up for being straight, not so much.

As for Mathew Sheppard, McKinney confessed to the police that he and his buddy pretended to be gay to lure Sheppard out to the truck. He then tried to use gay panic as a defense. They knew he was gay, they pretended to be gay and then beat and tortured him before leaving him tied up in the freezing rain. Whether Matthew Shepard was a methamphetamine dealer is a controversial claim that is heavily disputed by investigators, friends, and his family.

There are a number of attacks on people just for being white, heterosexual, Christians, or Trump supporters.

I've cited many times the unhinged Democrat/Left's ongoing attacks on Trump supporters, that average about one attack a day nationwide.

I also cited after George Zimmerman was acquitted, that many whites were attacked nationwide by blacks, some of them even saying "This is for Trayvon."
Going back even further, at least to the attacks on oblivious whites in their cars just driving in L.A., after the 4 officers who beat Rodney King were acquitted in April 1992.

So gays aren't exactly the only people ever singled out and attacked.
I think the most persecuted are Jews. And the statistics clearly exist to back that up.
