just read thru the first 9 or so chapters (i think) last night. and... hey, its pretty good. im not exactly sure if i started with #1 or 2 or 3, or something -- it did seem to just BAM start from nowhere. other than that, tho, its pretty damn cool. i loved the ron garney issue of jla (his art work is SOOO good... loved the captain america days ... VERY disappointed there weren't more batman shots in that ish). i skipped a lotta text at some points, cuz i was readin all of it right before i went to bed. but, what i got, i really liked. and i always read the jeph loeb written stories in full. what'd you think?

Well it was built up a little bit to in the Super-titles.
And OWAW in retrospect? A massive waste of money.
I think it started off pretty good. I'll agree with you there. But I think as it went on, it really feel apart. And in the end became the bastard child of Invasion! and Galactus and they killed off a lot of characters and had hardly no reprocussions for most.
Plus Sgt. Rock shoulda died in WWII...he should not have been brought back for OWAW and then killed at the end of it.

I liked OWAW. Had a good build up, big gigantic threat for everyone to fight, lots of action, good twists...all around good read to me. My favorite being Superman #172.
And wow...you can pull back threads from years ago on this board huh...that's new. To me anyways. Pretty cool.

Yeah it was great. I liked the part when Superman got tired of slugging things and hadda ask Luthor what to do. A real fucking highlight. Worst Crossover EVER ![[worst. icon. ever.]](graemlins/comicguy-icon00.gif)

"OWAW"...ah, yes. The story that entrenched the crybaby, cowardly, brain-dead, self-absorbed Super-Pansy into the current continuity.
The story that led to Lois Lane performing her ultimate "Superbitch" act.
The story that was pure garbage from the get-go and destroyed the goodwill Jeph Loeb had earned from the fans.
The story that ended in the most stupid and incoherent way possible.
The story that cemented once and for all what a total mess the current Superman is.
Cack. Pure cack.

I had a lot of fun on the OWAW board. The 4th Pip and I spent the final week it was open being as insulting as absolutely possible to the creative team. Good times.

The story was a lost cause way before that issue.

I personally didn't care when Strange Visitor died. She was already a totally meaningless character, so her death meant nothing either to me or to the story. Then again, nothing in that story meant squat. It was half-assed from start to finish.
Note to DC: War stories are supposed to make and have an impact. They're not supposed to be slush like this was.

Oh, yes, but a lost cause can snowball out of control even worse.
One week, Supes bows down to Lex cause ol' Supes is a pathetic piece of shit. Next week, he pulls a damn DBZ-esque fusion and boom, someone be dead. Then next week "I'm going to kill him." Um, HELLO? Action Comics #775 ring any bells, Berganza, Casey? Then we got Maxima pulling off a sacrifice that meant shit, then we got Superman pulling another DBZ thing and going Super Kryptonian 1,2,3 whatever, off to kill Brainiac again. Ay yi yi yi yi! And just when you think it can't get any worse, well, it does and still does save for the occasional issue here and there.

That would have to be the easiest re-write in history. I'd simply take everything out...and replace it with a story that...you know...didnt suck. If I had my way. OWAW wouldnt exsist.

Aw, shucks. You beat me to it.
You are right, though. Nothing short of tossing the story in garbage and replacing it with one that was actually decent would have been enough to save it.

Hell, let's retcon the whole post-Crisis Superman and be done with it! The whole continuity's gone to hell in a hand basket, anyway.
And no, I don't think Birthright is going to be the reboot Superman needs. DC's going out of its way to make it no more than a glorified Elseworlds.

I liked OW@W...in theory. It was a cool, big story. But the big problem is that they had this huge war that changed nothing. Superman wore black for a year, most of the people that died are back and that's it. I wish they'd put an elseworlds banner on it and let the writers bloody it up like a real war. Because making it part of continuity meant no one of importance was at risk.

Actually, Maxima, Hippolyta and Strange Visitor are still dead...
...between OWAW and the current Titans/YJ, will DC have ANY women left?
Or does OWAW REALLY stand for "Our War Against Women"??????
(It just keeps getting worse and worse...)

Strange Visitor is technically not dead. She just reverted to her previous persona of Kismet. That's who she was all along. The body that she was inhabiting was that of a girl who supposed to die at a young age in Smallville, but Waverider and Superman hid Kismet in her body to keep her safe from Dominus... at least that's what I remember. Kismet is still out there. So in other words, FF, stop your bitching! ![[biiiig grin]](images/icons/grin.gif)

So is Sam Lane, who, like all the characters you named off, was utterly useless dead weight whose death didn't mean jack to the story. Nobody cared when these guys died. If they'd had the balls to off major supporting characters, it might have made a big difference.
The story still sucked ass, though....

I don't do impressions. The occasional mime or lighthearted parody, but no impressions.
