quote: January 29, 2003 - Time Magazine has conducted a lengthy interview with Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker Mel Gibson about The Passion, his new film biography of Jesus (played by Frequency's Jim Caviezel). The film is shooting at Rome's Cinecitta studio with a cast that includes Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene and Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary. Gibson's production company, Icon, is footing the bill for the roughly $25 million film, which hopes to open Easter 2004 even though it's currently without a distributor.
Gibson spoke candidly about the controversies already surrounding his film as well as about previous screen adaptations of The New Testament. "This has been germinating inside me for 10 years," Mel told Time. "I have a deep need to tell this story. It's part of your upbringing, but it can seem so distant. The Gospels tell you what basically happened; I want to know what really went down." Gibson is so hellbent on historical authenticity that the entire film will be spoken in only Aramaic and Latin – and without subtitles! "The audience will have to focus on the visuals," said Mel. "But they had silent films before talkies arrived, and people went to see them."
One sequence in particular that Gibson won't pull any punches on will be the Crucifixion of Jesus. "It's gonna be hard to take. When the Romans scourged you, it wasn't a nice thing. Think about the Crucifixion – there's no way to sugarcoat that." Mel also told the magazine that he's been unimpressed with past films made about Jesus, including Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ. "You've got Harvey Keitel as Judas saying [in a Brooklyn accent], 'Hey, you ovah dere.'"
Gibson also recently spoke to Fox News' Bill O'Reilly about some of the controversies his film is already facing. Gibson, a conservative in an overwhelmingly liberal industry, has already accused unidentified members of the press of attempting a smear campaign against his film and of targeting members of his family for unfair scrutiny. "When you do touch this subject," said Gibson, "it does have a lot of enemies."

I read about this at foxnews.com. It sounds very fascinating. I agree that the cruxifiction should show what Jesus went through. However, I hope that he gives just as much if not more focus on the glory of Christ's resurection from the dead.
As far as doing the whole thing in Aremaic and Latin, though artsy, I think thats stupid. The gospels had some pretty damn fine life lessons and film is a good medium to present them. Jesus' parrables and speeches were mind blowing. Why make it where people can not understand them.

This sounds great. Mel Gibson's one of my favorite actors (and the only one me and my rommies agree on). He's a great conservative role model in Hollywood. Sadly, the Fox News Channel is included in my dorm cable (hmm...), so I missed the O'Reilly show. As far as the languages...I took Latin in high school, so it would be kind of neat to hear it spoken, as long as there are subtitles. Maybe the DVD would have dubbed voices.

If they had sub-titles that would be different.........but Gibson stated that there is going to be no sub-titles so people can focus on the visual......

How do you say "stupid" in Latin?
I was looking forward to the film but if I can't understand what the hell they're saying why bother.
You see they had silent films...because the technology for sound wasn't around..not coz it was artsy.
I dont even think the controversy stirred up by the Catholics will even save this film from box office disaster.

Big Fucking Deal. Gibson is decent actor and I love his films, but this is one of those masturbatory "Labors of love". It means they do it for themselves, and no one else. It's not a message, but they see some kind of beauty.
I am not going to see it. I read the article in Time and Mel was yawning and trashing other versions of the Hey-Zeus's life.
If you want to see a good, controversial version, see Scorsese's the Last Temptation of Christ. Gibson's only complaint was Harvey Keitel's accent. Bronx accent for a Jewish guy. So, he makes a movie where people don't speak English.
Watch Scorsese's film, enjoy Niko Kazanzakisis's view of Jesus and listen to Peter Gabriel's AWESOME score. (Got it on CD). Not religious, but that movie really pissed off the Catholic church, and after discussing it with my Catholic mom, I understood why.
Also, I saw it in a graduate film course that was based on Hollywood Filmmakers Cassavettes and Scorsese. Gave the presentation on Last Temptation.

I'm fairly open-minded when it comes to film. That being said, I'd be much more than willing to give The Passion a try. I've seen other adaptations of Christ's life and, like Gibson, have been unimpressed. I'd be more than willing to see an adaptation by someone who is striving, above all else, for historical authenticity, rather than taking artistic licenses with said story. The Latin/Aramaic angle leaves a funny taste in my mouth right now, but I think it either has the possibility of growing on me or not.
The one thing I know for sure is that this movie will cause controversy. People are very touchy about their religion. Anything that tampers with the eggshell bubble that they've constructed leaves them a drooling mass of hysteria instead of stretching their way of thinking about things. It's okay, in my mind, to like a film and still not agree or condone everything it says. That's the way I feel about Dogma, although my father would say it's nothing by blasphemous, heretical garbage.
Films based on Christ and/or religion will make more enemies than any film about vice or corruption. Guaranteed.

quote: In a statement issued to Variety (and plugged at Sci Fi Wire of all places!), Oscar-winning actor/director Mel Gibson lashed out at critics of his still unfinished film about Jesus, The Passion, who have branded the film anti-Semitic and portrayed Gibson as a bigot and a fanatic.
"To be certain, neither I nor my film is anti-Semitic," Gibson said "The Passion is a movie meant to inspire, not offend. ... My intention in bringing it to the screen is to create a lasting work of art and engender serious thought among audiences of diverse faith backgrounds (or none), who have varying familiarity with this story."
Among Gibson's most ardent detractors have been the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Anti-Defamation League. The former has already issued an apology for slamming The Passion before seeing one frame of film from it. What I found most interesting is that the Conference has "agreed to return all unauthorized copies of the script obtained by its members." Wow, who are those guys' sources? Hook me up, dudes!
Meanwhile, Gibson's production company, Icon, is pressuring the Anti-Defamation League to offer "a similar resolution," as Sci Fi Wire puts it.
The fit hit the shan about The Passion back in March when the New York Times ran a story (labeled a "hit piece" by many) that profiled Gibson's controversial, arch-conservative dad, author Hutton Gibson. As Sci Fi reminds us, the Times "explored the traditionalist and controversial Catholic beliefs of the actor's father, which are not condoned by the Roman Catholic Church. The story also quoted the elder Gibson as denying the Holocaust ever took place."

I like hte idea of this. Sure it's self indulgent, but what the hell, at least it's a bit different.
As for his dad saying the Holocaust didn't happen, if it's true the guy's a bit of a tosser. That's one of those viewpoints that has always mistified me. as does any antisemitism from christians. Christ was one last I checked.

I live in the middle of the Bible Belt. All the big churches around here are buying out entire showings for their congregations. It'll be a couple of weeks before the hub-bub dies down. I'll check it out then.
But I have heard some good stuff about it. People are coming out of the theaters in tears, saying that it's the most emotional movie they had ever seen.

'Passion' Takes in $23.6M on Opening DayMel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" took in $23.6 million on opening day, positioning it as the biggest religious-themed movie since "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." The film also took in an estimated $3 million in private screenings for church groups Monday and Tuesday in advance of the official opening Wednesday. The $26.6 million U.S. and Canada total released Thursday was well above distributor Newmarket Film's preliminary estimate of $15 million to $20 million a day earlier.

My mother saw it, she said everyone in the theater (including her) were in tears at the end. She also said she had to hang her head during big parts of it due to intensity.
Damn.

Not impressed. The movie only establishes that Jesus can take abuse. Think of a remake of Star Wars was done and they started at the beginning of the attack on the Death Star rather than when Leia was taken prisoner by Darth Vader. Then they end it right when Luke's torpedoes go into the Death Star but don't show it blowing up. That 's how The Passion is.
"You kind of get tired giving the other team credit. At some point you've got to look in the mirror and say 'I sucked.'"

Haven't seen it yet, and most likely wont see it in theaters because I'm squeemish and from what I've heard (but I don't how accurate this is) it's as bad as the storming of Normandy scene in Saving Private Ryan, only 2 hours long. Now I know I barely made it through that scene with out having to leave due to getting nice and queesy, if what I heard is true, I wont be seeing Passion any time soon.
But, I did hear 2 people (at different tables) talking about it Wednesday night while in Denver. Unfortunatley, I didn't listen to what they were saying because I was with my boss and we were talking work, plus I was having stomach problems, so I was distracted by wondering when my stomach would decide to settle down and let me feel human again.
But my church group went to see it tonight, so I'm going to ask them about it when I see them Sunday and/or Wednesday.
It's a rented tux ok? I'm not going comando in another man's fatigues.

When I heard that story I thought of the part in SCROOGED where the lady died from watching the Scrooge promo, Bill Murray thought it was great publicity! Later in the movie he's called by the media for a response and yells at the stagehands to stop hammering... I imagine Gibson yelling 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND YOUR OWN BODY STOP THE GODDAMN HAMMERING OF CHRIST TO THE CROSS!"
too blessed to be stressed

I saw it on Thursday night, but I didn't come away with the same feelings as most people did. While I felt sympathy for Mary and many of the other characters, I felt as a viewer very distanced from Jesus himself.
I know this is an adaptation of part of the New Testament and all, but while watching the movie I never got a sense of what Jesus was all about. It's like he had no personality. It was difficult to feel sympathy for him because of that, though I felt a great deal of sympathy for Mary, Magdalena, John, and some of the others.
P.S.: This movie certainly didn't seem anti-Semitic to me --almost all the good characters are Jewish, except for Claudia, Pontius Pilate's wife. There were people in the crowd who wanted Jesus dead, but there were also people in the crowd who wanted him to be saved. And, of course, Jesus himself, Mary, and all of the disciples were Jewish. If anything the film seemed "anti-Roman"...
