Actually, I was thinking along those lines myself. I was thinking, having him born during the wild west period of America's history and also having him be an ex-outlaw who discovers his immortality when him and his gang (probably his brothers like the "James Gang") were "bushwhacked" by the law. Being the only one to survive the ambush I'd have him flee the States (because he would be blamed for the massacre) and disappear for years. Over that time I'd have him go insane (by outliving all his loved ones and friends) and develop his "death wish". Then I'd have him reappear in Gotham.
