'Gargoyles' DVD Confirmed for 2004In the "Ask Greg" section of the Section 8 website, a website devoted to the hit animated series Gargoyles, show co-producer and co-creator Greg Weisman updated fans on the upcoming Gargoyles DVDs. "I was contacted by John Hanna at Buena Vista Home Video," said Weisman. "The Gargoyles DVD is definitely on. As some of you know, I had been concerned since I hadn't heard from John in a long time. The "bad news" is that it has been moved back to 2004 release to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the series. Gargoyles features a band of powerful, mythical creatures, who once guarded a medieval Scottish fortress but have since been transported to present-day Manhattan. At night, these courageous guardians come alive to protect the city from an assortment of treacherous modern-day barbarians. Weisman also revealed that Buena Vista Home Video is currently deciding on whether to approach the series with season sets or with compilation discs. More comments and information can be found in the "Ask Greg" section of the Section 8 website.

![[woooOOOOoooo!]](graemlins/smilewoo.gif) !!! I hope they decide on season sets because Gargoyles is one of those few American cartoons that had an overall plotline to it and it deserves to be released in the order it was created in. "compilations?" ![[no no no]](graemlins/nono.gif) ....

I only saw it in the order that USA used to run it in...i.e. all of the Avalon-related episodes together.
I'd most definately want to have this set...I almost don't care how it comes out as long as it's gettable!

Obviously, if I had to choose between a "Best Of" Gargoyles DVD or no Gargoyles DVD at all, I'd choose the compilation DVD. I just see a season set to be a no-brainer in this case, considering that Gargoyles had an intricate continuity. Also, if Disney is gonna wait until next year to release them because of it's 10th anniversary, then they should really go all out with it and a season set makes the most sense.

I've only skimmed it, but here's a site that looks like a good place for Gargoyles info: http://www.gargoyles-fans.org/char.html

really really cool show.
in short, it was disney's weapon against the then-uber popular BTAS crowd.
a few thousand years ago, there were gargoyles and magic and dragons and all that crap. someone placed a spell on the gargoyles turning them to stone permanently (instead of just stone by day). flash forward to present day, when a lex luthor - type guy buys an old scottish castle, adorned with gargoyles, and brings it to NYC. a lil magic here n'there and he's able to revive the gargoyles.
and chaos ensues!
from that point on, they do the regular crime fighting bit, in a spawn-like sorta way (not crap -- rather, its where they're sorta figuring things out and remembering past events as they go along)
excellent show. there were individual plot lines per episode, of course, but almost always a running plot in the background per show grouping, per season, or even the entire dynamics of the show itself.
good stuff.
as for the DVD release -- every show that is released should be done by season. other options are simply annoying, especially to completists. however, if its some gargoyles or no gargoyles, id go for some any day.

You know, after looking at some fansites about Gargoyles it's just reinforced my opinion that Gargoyles was a frickin' awesome show. I mean, what other cartoon would you find: MacBeth & King Arthur fighting over who would be the true King of England; a group of merchenaries whose day-jobs were as hosts of a children's show; Easter Island aliens; a gangland war between a NY mob boss and a Czech gun-runner; homeless people used as scientific guinea pigs; a clan of Bizarro-like clones whose collective IQ would barely break triple digits; the king of the Fairefolk waging an all out assault on Manhattan; and the Illuminati, to boot! Rob, it's interesting that you'd compare Xanatos to Lex Luthor. In my mind, Xanatos is what Luthor would've been if he didn't have a psycological hang-up about Big Blue. I must've been around 14 or 15 when I first saw the show. After a few episodes it became clear to me that Xanatos wasn't your standard-issue bad guy. He wasn't one of those "I'm so eeeevil!" guys. He was more, um... amoral I guess. Also, he & the Gargoyles didn't have that standard good guy/bad guy dynamic either. He never really hated the Gargolyes, he merely saw them as a means to an end in his search for eternal life. Even after they started to interfere with his plans, he thought of them as interloping pests that could still be valuable in certain situations. They even became allies toward the end of the second season. Great show.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There was a Darkwing Duck thread on the DCMBs awhile back and it mentioned that DW premiered 12 years ago.
I was like " WTF? 12 years ago?!" I still remember watching the two-hour movie premiere.

I don't get Toon Disney, but apparently they air Gargoyles episodes. They also apparently edit them for content. Here's a list of the cuts. Out of 78 episodes, 26 were edited for content. Amazing ![[yuh huh]](images/icons/rolleyes.gif)

Toon Disney edits all their shows, so I've heard. Even Tailspin, for Chrissakes.
I only passively watched Gargoyles back during it's original airing... After reading what you guys have to say and a bit of info about it, I just might be convinced that it is one of the best animated series ever.

I remember really getting into Gargoyles as a youngin' (10 years, dear God!). You just couldn't find a cartoon show with such an intricate plot AND interesting character dynamic. Plus it built very well on the "stories of lore" and made boring shi-ite interesting.

Gargoyles was a cool show, I'm looking forward to getting those DVDs. Somebody should get a deal with Disney, and have Greg Weisman write a Gargoyles comic, that I'd definitely buy. Hell, even Merman is getting a one-shot. MERMAN?!?! ![[whaaaa!]](eek01.gif)

Greg Weisman, the guy who created Gargoyles, used to work in comics. Taken from the "Ask Greg FAQ": quote: I also worked for DC Comics for some time. The main thing I did was CAPTAIN ATOM. But I worked as a writer or assistant editor on DC Challenge, Tales of the Teen Titans, Justice League of America, Justice League, Justice League International, All Star Squadron, Infinity Inc, Young All Stars, Titans Spotlight, Silverblade, Watchmen, Secret Origins, Millenium, Who's Who, etc.
He also did a couple of Gargoyles comic stories for the Marvel series (Marvel had the Disney licenses at the time) but they were never published because the comic series was cancelled before his stories saw print

I was checking this thread out 'cuz my buddy, Eric, is a supah-fan (as pronounced by us Bostonians) of Gargoyles. I figure I'll see what all the hubbub's about and pass it along...y'know, make it look like I know something he doesn't. Imagine my surprise when I read that, in his first paragraph, Rob's referencin' the very board that my buddy built and runs.
Funny stuff. My world just got a li'l smallah...

Hot diggity damn! I loved, loved, loooooooooooved that show. For my high school graduation present, my mom got me an animation cel from the first episode (BEST GIFT EVER!!). That show was excellent, especially the voice talents. Martina Sirtis as Demona... God, who knew Deanna Troi could be such an evil bitch?

Fantastic. Gargoyles season 1 on DVD (sounds, from that blurb, like it'll be a season set. Groovy). Danny want.
Thing is- I can’t spell or type. I spell so badly my spell check doesn’t even know what I was trying to spell. And I have five Eisners HAHAHAHHA!!
