As we all know by now, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the dismissal of Mark Waid for some unknown writer of plays. We know the story, and there's been a huge upset from Marvel fans (and non-Marvel fans looking to bash Marvel). Well, here's more fuel for the fire.
Mark Waid was fired so as to not overshadow The Ultimate Fantastic Four.
While I personally did not care for his writing (I'm not a fan of Waid's at all), many people told me that his run on the FF was some of the best in years, and sales certainly seemed to reflect it (on an FF scale anyhow).
Then the firing, and the replacement, under the guise of making it more like a family sitcom, to coincide with the proposed direction for the movie which may never get made or released. Everyone bitches, everyone gripes, everyone ignores, but in the back of their heads, they've boycotted the new writer's FF.
A few months.
Suddenly, Marvel, Bendis and Millar swoop in and save the day! HEY! It's the Ultimate Fantastic Four! Look how successful Ult. X-Men, Ult. Spiderman and Ult. Avengers are! Hey, old FF fans! Pissed off that Waid was fired and good FF stories are soon to be a thing of the past? Worry no longer! Bendis and Millar are on the case!
It makes sense to me, anyhow. In the end, I don't care about the FF, Ultimate or otherwise.
Just a theory, though.
Discuss.
