The reason behind Man of Steel, believe it or not, was the fact that the Superman comics, the stories, sucked at that point. Since it was not the only comic that sucked, they did a massive revamp and made Crisis to justify it storywise. Now the current Superman comics suck. It's not enough to make a massive revamp, but it's more than enough justification for Waid's Birthright.
