Anyone else pick up the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire reunion?
It's only the first issue, and the paper quality on it was about as shitty as shitty can get, but everybody (creatively) seemed to slip easily into their old roles and buildup what seems to be a potentially fun series. I loved the old JLI series, and this matches up so far. Although I'm confused about Beetle's condition. When did that happen?
My only other complaint is Giffen's dialogue. I had the same problem with Suicide Squad. There will be panels of an establishing shot, or a shot with none of the main characters in it, but two or more people talking. It's difficult to tell who's who sometimes, at least until the characters are shown, sometimes pages later.

I haven't read it yet (won't be able to pick it up until after the holiday weekend, I suppose) but almost everyone is giving it high praise. I'm looking forward to it.
For what it's worth, Mr. Nobody, I heard that the 'shitty' comic book paper was chosen for a reason: to emulate the JLI era of the 1980's.

Even the paper used back in the 80s was far superior to the one used for this book, though.
I'm having issues (get it?!) with comic paper quality these days.

I may have to pick this up as single issues (heresy!). JLI brings back fond memories of the late 80s for me. I remember driving around some friends in a shitty rusting Toyota with a new issue of JLI#6 in the back, and one of my female friends read it, initially with some contempt, and then said, a few minutes later, "Hey this is actually funny."
The series is targetted at the nostalgia crowd, and I'm willing to accept that I'm one of them.

This was classic Giffen JL to me. He and the art team slipped in without missing a beat, and it felt just like the old days. The parts with L Ron working the drive through at a burger stand and the part with Max recruiting Booster were just great. As a matter of fact all the parts with L Ron were funny. I am so gald that DC has already given the green light to make another 6 issues after the first 6. With the lame state of the current JLA book this was a very welcome breath of fresh air.

I was transported back to 1987 when reading this book. (Thankfully, though, Gene Roddenberry was still alive then and was able to find a way to transport me back to 2003 just before Biff Tannen repossessed my house.)
The Time Trust gives it a 'Thumbs Up'.

Damn good.
Giffen. DeMatties. Maguire. Fuck yeah. I hear they're already signed on for a second storyline.
Brilliant. The only thing missing is Gardner.

Might just have to find this. JL #1 was the first comic I ever physically laughed out loud to!

I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
But my favorite part has to be the inclusion of Mary Marvel. I think Kevin Maguire does one of the best renditions of her I've seen in modern times. She's adorable-- in BOTH identities! (So, WHO NEEDS another rip-off version of "Supergirl"? Mary Marvel was the ORIGINAL, in any case!!)

Picked up my copy yesterday. There weren't many left in the shop, which is encouragung.
It was funny. Not BWAH-HA-HA funny, but good enough that I'll stick around to see what happens next.
