I think I'll hold out for Birthright, myself. After all my hemming and hawing, I might as well buy the thing. It's pretty obvious that Waid knows what he's doing with Superman. Besides, Metropolis just doesn't interest me to any great extent.

I'll give the Loeb/McGuinness World's Finest book a try, but this is Loeb's last chance. If he blows this and delivers more slipshod work, I will never buy another story by him ever again. He dropped the ball a year and a half into his Superman run, and his Batman run is a disgrace. I'm tired of seeing him coast and produce crap when he's capable of better work.

I may be wrong, but hasn't Loeb's Batman been in the top 10 for months now??

Not trying for a dig since I respect EVERYTHING you've argued over in regards to the Superman titles. It just seems you have a real mad-on for Loeb.

I myself think Batman is rather good as a matter of fact.

I think much of what Loeb did on Superman was 3/4 washed out by the tag-team writing format on the Berganza-Lead Superman books.

Personally, I have enjoyed his Batman stuff, although, since he has used the "serial" format with Batman before (the Long Halloween, Dark Victory) I was hoping for shorter, punchier story lines. I think it would have been more of a showcase had he written 8-12 separate stories...

But I give credit where I think its due and although the book gets a huge lift from Jim Lee I think Jeph more than pulls his weight.

What's this topic about again?

Oh yeah AOS...

It’s easily my favorite Super-Book at the moment. Casey's not finishing up work started 3 years ago like Kelly is on Action and he's not writing a fractured Superman primer like Seagle is on the flagship title.

Casey’s writing stories he wants to write and exploring a direction he wants to explore...

It should have been done 4 years ago with Loeb and McGuinness.

Oh well. What do I know? Berganza got a promotion, and all I got was crappy Superman comics written by the Borg... [...rassamnfrackin...]

First off, there are no well written superman books right now. There are also crappily drawn superman books right now. Birthright will probably be pretty good though.
Berganza is the common evil in my mind. Berganza is also in charge of the new outsiders book, and I have little faith in Winnick..the only saving grace is Raney as artist....

DC needs to focus on editorial change, not so much the art changes that didio has been talking about....They need to steal Tom brevoort from Marvel...that could save the Supes books and the JLA book...

I don't know if I have a "mad-on" for Loeb, per se, but I have not liked his recent output much at all. Starting with the lead-up to "OWAW," the quality of his work on Superman took a horrific nose-dive. I wasn't a very happy camper about that, because I loved For All Seasons and had been enjoying his Superman up until May 2001 (the Aquaman two-parter he did is one of my all-time favorite Superman stories). But starting with "OWAW," I felt all the heart went out of his work, that he stopped caring about what he was doing. His work lost any and all sense of direction. And prior to that, I'd been one of his most vocal defenders whenever anyone would take potshots at him for not being Dan Jurgens 2.0. But man, "OWAW" was the worst case of eating crow I've ever done. I felt pretty stupid for defending him for stridently after his stories went south, and I still do.

As for Batman, I find the book excruciatingly boring and uninvolving. Again, this bugs me, because I enjoyed The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. But aside from bringing back the Batman/Catwoman romance, there's nothing else of interest going on in the book. Kia Asamiya's Batman: Child of Dreams (which I was fortunate enough to pick up today) was everything Loeb's Batman should be and isn't: suspenseful, exciting, and absorbing. I actually got worked up over what was going on in that book. Loeb's book, on the other hand, bores me to death, and I dropped it from my pull list today. I honestly don't think the book has any real punch to it. Sure, Jim Lee's art is good, but so is Scott McDaniel's, and I dropped all of the Superman books except Birthright and World's Finest.

It's not that I haven't enjoyed Loeb's stuff before. I have, and at one point I was one of his loudest (not to mention loudmouthed) advocates. But I feel that his work of late has been extremely lazy and half-hearted, and as someone who was once a big fan of his, I find it galling. That's why I say that World's Finest is Loeb's last chance to impress me. I want to see him get back in the game, to justify the faith I once had in him. He started out strong on Superman and ultimately let me down. I had high hopes for his collaboration with Lee on Batman, but the book has done absolutely nothing for me. I don't want World's Finest to be another disappointment. But if it is, that's it. I can't support something I don't enjoy. Especially with Child of Dreams now; as far as I'm concerned, that's the new benchmark for Batman stories. If you don't aspire to that level of excellence, then get out of the way and make room for someone who will.

The only book they could cancel would be Superman. Both Action and The Adventures of Superman (which is really Superman VOL.1) both originated in the 1930s. Superman (VOL.2, 1986-present) is the only expendable book of the three.

Hey, I've got an idea:

1. Cancel Superman.

2. Change The Adventures of Superman back to Superman (as it was from 1939-1986), and make it the in-continuity Superman title.

3. Keep Action, but make it an anthology book with rotating creative teams telling the Superman stories of their fancy. No rules, no need to adhere to continuity, just tell the stories you want and run wild.

Wouldn't that be a feasible option?

It doesn't make sense to me. There's four prime Bat-Books, and several satellited titles. Two of the four main ones have back-ups.

There's three Superman titles, period (not including minis). I think Action Comics should at least get an 8-pager, have PAD do a running Supergirl or something.

What are you talking about? They have cancelled all the extra Supes titles, more or less. In the last year and a half alone, three S titles were cancelled (Superboy, Supergirl, Man of Steel).

But Adventures and Action have both been around since the 1930s. You can't cancel those titles. The only one you could scrap without causing an uproar is Superman, because it's the youngest of the bunch.

Again, I propose the following:

The end result would be two Superman books. One in the mainline continuity, the other as an anthology. Why wouldn't this work?

Well if they can get a decent team on ONE \S/ book then worry about the others!

And I really dont see DC worrying to much about the future of \S/ titles as the sell coz they got Superman!

DC/WB may soon regret that kind of thinking if Marvel keeps blowing their asses away at the box office!

Marvel wasn't always doing so well at the box office. For years they couldn't a single one on the screen that was worth $7 a ticket, so what goes around comes around.

And I'm sure DC is working on a new creative team. I imagine they're going to let Seagle and Mcdaniel continue on to #200, then who knows. Wizard reports big changes for Superman in January, so I imagine by that they mean a new creative team, starting with #201 probably. The honoarble thing to do would be to let Seagle make it to #200. It would be pretty chicken shit of DC to commit to him, then back out and replace him so early on in his run. Adventures and Action are good right now (action being the best in my opinion) and Superman isn't that awful.

The only real reason DC ever had the fortune of getting their films out of the can was their tie-in with Warner Brothers.

Look at the record, DC gives us two decent renditions of Superman and then Batman and then shits out the following films! Occasionlly, throwing out a Steel (Jesus Christ what were they thinking...Shaq?!?! the guy can barely read for Christ sake, much less act!).
But naught else.

Marvel hits big with a lesser known Blade then comes to bat with X-Men, Spidey and Daredevil. With Hulk soon to come!

Lets not stop with the movie work Marvel has done.

Spider-man went to shit, a trend it was headed toward even before the Clone Bullshit. Marvel gets some of the best names to relaunch Spidey and it gets backl on track. Getting rid of Peter's wife was the best idea yet! Part of his draw was a loser who couldnt keep the girl...suddenly he's married to a hot model/actress?!?!?!

DC needs to do the same with Supes. Get a decent team. Allow some changes that muck up what Byrne fucked up. Someone here once mentioned having Mxy or someone erase the fact that Supes was ever married! Yeah its a stretch but it'd be worth it to get rid of that sappy shit with Lois.

I'm reasonably sure Seagle will stay on until #200. It was most likely in his contract to go that far, and in the #195 solicitation it says it's leading up to 200.

That means the shake-ups will probably start with #201. What other titles are we getting changes?

JLA gets Byrne and Claremont this winter... JSA has a semi-new direction and new artist with #52... same with Flash for #201.... Ryan Sook on Detective in October I believe... Azz/Risso on Batman with #621... Rucka on Wonder Woman with #195... crazy new PAD series...

I guess you'll be disappointed to know that they brought MJ back...although I don't know for how long. (Knowing Marvel, they'll find a way to screw up Peter's relationship again.)

Personally, I hated it when they "got rid" of MJ. I'm really sick of seeing comic book marriages go to pot, and just ONCE I want to see one go the distance. It did my heart good to see Peter and MJ reunited, but given that Marvel wanted to keep them separated because of their relationship going bust in the movie (Kevin Smith complained about it when Marvel tried to get him to write one of the books), I'm highly skeptical that this reunion will last. I've been checking out Amazing Spider-Man on and off lately, and if Peter and MJ stay together this time, I'll definitely stay on. If they get separated again, I'll be off the book again. I'm rather tired of being jerked around. Just once, I'd like to see one comic book marriage work out.

I don't think you can make changes like that short of a reboot, personally ( http://www.otherearths.com/rants/OzRant.htm ). The arbitrary "only one Kryptonian rule" has already botched up the Kryptonian characters who could and should have been revived in the Byrne-instigated continuity. Krypton's already been cheapened to the point where Superman has no real value for his heritage and is simply a Kansas farm boy in tights. Far too much of the mishandling of the characters has become entrenched as the official characterizations. And the whole editorial/corporate stance of DC is "keep everything exactly the same because we're too afraid to contradict a single thing Byrne did." It's why Birthright, a book which, in your own words, will "allow some changes that muck up what Byrne fucked up," is being treated as little more than a gussied-up Elseworlds. It's not the reboot Superman needs, and DC refuses to let it be labeled as "Ultimate Superman" for fear that it'll detract from the middling offerings of the monthlies. DC, out of editorial/corporate complacency and a paralyzing fear of pissing off the ever-shrinking, increasing vocal minority who's hijacked the books and wants things to stay stagnant and predictable, doesn't have the guts to instate changes in the Byrne-created continuity. And let's be honest, Byrne wrote the series into kind of a dead end when he cut off any chance of properly revisiting any of the better aspects of the Silver Age, made Luthor a businessman who can NEVER be defeated or humiliated, and made Krypton a dismal mess best left forgotten. The rules he set up wound up being far more limiting than helpful.

As for Woodstock's question about which creators I'd like to see on Superman...I have a huge list of writers and artists I'd love to see tackle the character. I mean HUGE, two pages worth. But the way the books stand now, is throwing names at them in the hopes that they can magically repair a sinking ship really the answer? They tried it with Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness, and Joe Kelly, and it failed. They made a big deal out of Steven Seagle taking over for Loeb, and he fell flat after his first couple issues. I think there's something fundamentally wrong with this incarnation of Superman, something that just throwing big names at it won't fix. I think you'd need to wipe the slate clean and start over before you could let the big boys come in. Either that or do an Ultimate Superman book where there would be an automatic clean slate. Oh, wait, that's what Birthright was supposed to be before DC decided that an "Ultimate"-esque Superman book would hurt the regular titles.

I'm not trying to be a kill-joy, Woodstock. Believe me when I say that. I'll be sure to post up my writer/artist picks in my next post, promise. But I don't think playing the "name game" on this incarnation of Superman is going to fix the more fundamental problems with it.

And now, as promised, my aswer to Woodstock's "what creators would you want to see on Superman" question:

WRITERS
Nicholas Meyer (be it for movies, TV, novels, or comics, this guy's perfect for the Man of Steel)
Brad Bird
Tim McCanlies
Paul Dini
J. Michael Straczynski (Superman is the ultimate dream project for this guy)
Mark Waid
Michael Stackpole
Jim Kreuger
Fabian Nicieza (see the above statement for JMS; it applies here, too)
John Arcudi
Geoff Johns
Elliot S! Maggin
Kurt Busiek
Joel Goss

Joss Whedon
Mark Farmer
David Goyer

Michael Jan Friedman
David Brin
Mike Allred
Colleen Doran
Jo Duffy
Chuck Dixon
James Robinson

ARTISTS
Emiliano Santalucia
Dustin Nguyen
Steven Butler
Anthony Chun
Colleen Doran
Joshua Middleton
Bryan Hitch (provided that he learns how to stick to a monthly schedule)
Ryan Benjamin
Steve McNiven (once he leaves CrossGen)
Gary Frank
Tom Raney
Adam Kubert
Paul Pelletier (once he leaves CrossGen, and preferably drawing Superman in the cartoony style he used when doubling for Ed McGuinness)
Mike Allred
J.G. Jones
Ron Garney (he cited Superman as one of his dream projects once)
Pat Broderick
Tom Lyle
Jim Cheung (once he leaves CrossGen)
Sean Chen
Ron Lim
Steve Skroce
Lee Bermejo
Gregg Schigiel (he did the "Fast Lane" insert in Marvel's November 1999 comics)
Darryl Banks
Greg Land (once he leaves CrossGen)
Graham Nolan
Mark Bagley (see the above statement for Garney; it applies here, too)
Quique Alcatena
Barry Kitson (his last stay was too short)
Kerry Gammill (ditto)
Martin Egeland
Roger Cruz
Rod Whigham
Keu Cha
Francis Manipaul
Steve Rude (at least get him to do fill-ins and covers)
Art Adams (ditto)
Tom Derenick
Leinil Yu
Andy Kubert (see the above statement for Bagley; it applies here, too—however, his art looks best when it's inked by Jesse Delperdang)
Gordon Purcell
Chris Sprouse
Louis Small
Alan Davis (provided that he learns how to stick to a book for more than just a handful of issues)
Eduardo Barretto (as long as he inks himself)
Bernard Chang
Scott Benefiel
John Statema
Dante Bastianoni
Mike Deodato Jr.
Rafael Kayanan

Just mix and match the writers and artists however you like, and you'll have a creative tem I'd be pleased with. Hope this answers your question.

I have done the unthinkable and dropped all Superman books!

Nothing more to add other that what Franta and King Krypton have already said.

However, I will say that I enjoyed Byrnes run to begin with but soon got tired - very tired of it, especially the supporting characters and their relationships, it just didn't compare to the pre-crisis set-up.

I perservered but enough was enough and I decided to drop the books....just as they announced the Death of Superman - I hung on. Didn't enjoy it but I did really really like Reign of the Supermen, it's probably my favourite in continuity post Crisis story. I carried on for a while but soon realised how bored I was but they then announced Electric Superman! Now I knew this would be crap but I had to read it. Yet again I was going to drop'em and this time they announced Loeb et al. They were all quite readable but nothing special, which Superman should be. The only saving grace was McGuinness, as Loeb made me absolutely hate Lois and if I hear Beef Bourgione one more time, I'll have to kill someone - Kamphausen, come here for a minute!

I really really love the character, so I will defintely pick up Birthright and Worlds Finest.

King Krypton, you're big Superman fan by the sounds of things, tell me some of your favourite POST- Crisis Superman stories, as I said, the only one that I enjoyed was Reign of the Supermen and of course Superman for all Seasons - there must be more?

You also Mxy-baby! I need to know!

I keep saying Im gonna drop it...just havent yet but really should have after the Worlds at War shit...and the crap with Superman "knowing" his father was alive. And turns out Pops has amnesia!
I was about to kill kamphausen myself at that time it was so gay!!!

"The Brainiac Trilogy" by Roger Stern and Kerry Gammill (Action #647-649) remains perhaps my favorite Superman story of them all.

Jerry Ordway's "Truth, Justice, And The American Way" (Superman VOL.2 #53) is a favorite of mine, as well. Love the beginning between Clark and Lois. Oh, what might have been.... [sad]

"The Future Is Now!" by Karl Kesel and Barry Kitson (TAOS #508) is perhaps my second favorite post-Crisis story. Kitson and Mccarthy's dark, shadowy art has always tickled my fancy.

"Swan Song" by Stern (Action #700) is the high point of "The Battle For Metropolis," as well as a wonderful depiction of Luthor as the genocidal maniac he should be. Admittedly, I've always hated Jackson Guice and Denis Rodier's art (Guice is a better inker than a penciller, and Rodier should never ink anybody, period), but Stern's script is so good that it really doesn't matter.

"The Treasure Hunt Caper" by Ordway and Ron Frenz (Superman VOL.2 #110) is one of the few Jurgens-era stories that's a real gem. (Of course, consider who wrote it....) I loved the use of Plastic Man in that little tale.

Jeph Loeb's Aquaman two-parter (Superman VOL.2 #162-163) is a classic, tied with "The Brainiac Trilogy" as my all-time favorite Superman story. Superman at war with the forces of Atlantis, all because of Lex Luthor...gorgeous art by McGuinness and Pelletier...love it.

"What He Didn't Do" by Mark Schultz and Doug Mahnke (S: TMOS #103, I believe) is a nice little story with Aquaman and Supergirl. The encounter between Clark and Arthur is wonderfully done.

Superman: Peace On Earth by Dini and Ross remains a big favorite, too. It's everything Superman IV should have been and wasn't.

JLA: Heaven's Ladder by Mark Waid and Bryan Hitch really showed what a powerful and inspiring leader Superman can be. Clark's final challenge to the zealot is a great moment in Superman history.

"What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, And The American Way?" by Joe Kelly and Mahnke (Action #775) is another good one, if for no other reason that Superman is really pushed to the limit and comes out with flying colors. Again, this story shows Superman as a force to be reckoned with.

"Nasty Boys" By Dan Jurgens (TAOS #469) is just good dumb fun, if for no other reason than the comical way Superman slaps dreadnuaght around. Even Jurgens could crank out a good one once in a while, and this one was a gas because it was SO silly and SO over the top.

"Oh Captain, My Captain!" by Joe Kelly and Duncan Rouleau (Action #768) was a really nice team-up tale with Captain Marvel and the gang. Again, a good script covered for otherwise weak art and gave the good Captain a chance to shine.

The Superman/Madman Hullbaloo! by Mike Allred is another story I took a real shine too. Post-Crisis setting, but with a real Silver Age attitude and style, complete with inspired wackiness and appropriately retro art. As far as I'm concered, Allred's welcome to work on Superman again any time he wants.

Hope this answers your question.

OK, here it goes (no particular order):

Arcs and minis:
RETURN OF SUPERMAN/REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN: I like it because it's an epic story. It uses elements from the previous years of Superman stories (Hank Hensaw, Cadmus, Eradicator...), making it seem like the purpose of those elements was taking part in that story all along. The story's epilogue by Kesel and Grummett (I think it was Adventures #506) was an instant classic.

SUPERMAN/DOOMSDAY, HUNTER/PREY: Excellent art and an unusually good story from Jurgens (this is the best thing he ever did with the character, along with Superman/Aliens). If only they left Doomsday at that and stopped fucking with the poor guy...

EXILE SAGA: Particularly the Gladiator part. Particulary Action Annual #1. I read that one without reading any of the events surrounding it, and still I enjoyed it a lot.

BRAINIAC TRILOGY: It can summed up in the last scene. After letting Brainiac escape to save to save the city by taking a bomb to the sea, Superman comes out of the water, and gets a telepathical message from Brainiac promising that he'll be back. Superman says: "I'll be waiting for you. That's my promise!"

BLACKOUT: What I like the most about it is the relationship about Superman and Mr Z when they don't remember who they are. It's a shame he never showed up again. The last episode is also pretty cool, when Dubbilex gets into Superman's mind and helps him "tear down the walls" in his mind. Also, it introduced Lex Luthor II, the coolest version of the character so far.

THE BATTLE FOR METROPOLIS: Like KK here, I think "Swan Song" was the high point of the arc, but the whole thing was very enjoyable. I loved the way they took care of some of all the subplots so drastically (Underworlders, Lex/Happersen/Kelly, Cadmus/Westfield/Donovan).

SUPERMAN/MADMAN: I would like to see Allred team up with Alan Moore for a Superman story. He's a pretty good writer, though, as this story shows. Classic ending.

THE DAY OF THE KRYPTON MAN: Good fun, for the most part. The last two episodes (Adventures by Perez/Jurgens and Action by Stern/Perez) are excellent.

WORLD OF KYRPTON: I haven't read the other two "WORLD OF..." minis, but I've heard this one is the best, and I think it'd be hard to top it. It's to Superman what Atlantis Chronicles was to Aquaman. That means, it's a highly overlooked but excellent story. One of the best things I've read from Byrne. And Mignola is as good as always.

I also like the Legends Crossover and Time and Time Again.

Individual issues:
Superman #1 (Metallo), #11 (Mxy), #18 (Return to Krypton with Mignola), #40 (Simyan, Mokkari, and the 4-Armed Terror!), #51 (Mr Z), #74 (love that Waverider), #95 (part of DEAD AGAIN!, with the New Gods and Atom), #131 (Lena born, Berkowitz dies)
Adventures of Superman #441 (Mxy), #445 (Brainiac strikes again, Ordway's first great issue as writer), #448 ("The Ledge"... more great stuff from Ordway), #456 (Turmoil), #466 (Fantastic Four gone wrong), #482 (Parasite), #483 (party at Bibbo's!), #487 (the cover's worth it), #494 (Kismet), #495 (Forever People), #506 (Superman vs Superboy), #508 (Challengers), #510 (Bizarro), #518 (DEAD AGAIN!, in Apokolips), #520 (Night of a Hundred Thieves!), #525 (Death of Clark Kent is finally over!), #544 (Intergang is Back! Showed a lot of promise...), #550 (not the Luthor trial, for Gob's sake... the Guardian back up story), #558-#560 (Dominus Saga, Silver Age stories)
Superman: Man of Steel #5 (Curse of the Atomic Skull), #37 (BATS!), #39 (I can't remember what that one is about... but look at that cover!), #75 (Death of Mister Mxyzptlk), #80-81 (Dominus, Golden Age)
Action Comics #643 (Superman back on Earth, Perez debuts), #644 (Bye bye Matrix), #646 (fill in by Stern and Giffen!), #678 (they saved Luthor's brain! no kidding!), #701 (Luthor in the Kryptonian suit), #738 (Immonen's first one), #740 ("Ripper")
