I was reading my fresh new copy of JLA: STRENGTH IN NUMBERS today, when I was completely surprised to see no one other than the King of Dreams himself in one of the stories. (originally JLA 22-23)

I mean... wow.... how unexpected. Does anyone know what the fan reaction/feedback was around the time of original release?

Well I was reading the JLA at that time. I remember those issues fondly. I really enjoyed seeing Daniel show up. But...I don't really remember anybody making a big fuss about it, positive or negative.

Bit surprising since they try to make an effort to keep the DCU and the Vertigo continuity quite separate.

Yeah, but they're completely tied together nonetheless, what with Daniel Hall being Carter "Hawkman" Hall's grandson and all. Several other ties as well.

I think Gaiman knew DC would want to use the Lord of Dreams after his Sandman series ended, which is why he replaced him with the white-haired one by having Daniel "grow up" suddenly. Now DC can use the Lord of Dreams, but Gaiman can still keep his character really "his", y'know?

BTW, the Sandman also made a brief appearance in the AMBUSH BUG NOTHING SPECIAL back in the early '90s. It was pure Giffen.

I think there is some truth to that. Also, I think Gaiman wanted to "end" the story of Morpheus. (DC has a "gentleman's agreement" not to use any of the Endless without Gaiman's approval.)

Morpheus also appeared in a flashback during the Green Arrow "Quiver" storyline.

Didn't Death of the Endless appear in an issue of Captain Atom?

What? Really?

I know she appeared in an issue of the Hulk - giving someone a wedding present (a silver brush or mirror from memory) but we never actually see her face.

From what I heard, it was an unauthorized appearance.
